Unidentified network using one NIC

$

Hi

I need some help. Im currently trying to set up hyper-v on win server 2012.
I need to get this working with one NIC regardless if that is recommended or not.

In my VMs I get Unidentified network. (Not always but too often)
(I have one external switch)

I have created and deleted VMs and I have noticed that it is a lottery.
Sometimes it works without me doing anything and sometimes I need to
try to fix this unidentified network.

This one: http://superuser.com/questions/469806/windows-8-hyper-v-how-to-give-vm-internet-access
says that I should try to disable/re-enable "Allow management...."
First time I did that it worked, the next time it didnt.

Second try:
http://serverfault.com/questions/10014/disable-windows-server-network-locations
Nothing happend. I left this VM overnight, and next day I saw it was a Public Network and I
could reach Internet. Im 100% sure it was not up & running after I restarted this VM, it happend later(!)

I am not good at all when it comes to network settings, so I would really
appreciate a step by step 100% working tutorial how to get over this.

Do I need to follow this one:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/letsdothis/archive/2012/01/08/configuring-hyper-v-for-multiple-subnets-with-only-one-nic.aspx

Are there any simpler fix?
Help me win this lottery.....

Installing PowerShell on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 RC

I've got Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 RC running here and I'm trying to set up PowerShell for local server administration (I know I should manage it remotely but this is a developer workstation setup specifically to avoid multiple machines).

I followed Ben Armstrong's advice to install PowerShell (http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2009/02/10/enabling-powershell-on-hyper-v-server-2008-r2.aspx) and there was no error message but there doesn't seem to be a C:\Windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell folder to launch the shell.

I'm wondering if it's me just having a bad day or is it really missing in the RC?

Strange virtualization support behaviour

This is driving me nuts. I have Windows Server 2012 installed on a HP xw8400 Workstation with two e5320 1.86Gzh processors and I have my lab running on it, but it is way too slow.

When I remove the Hyper-V role and test the system with the Intel Processor Identification Utility I see that Intel Virtualization Technology is set to Yes. (Which is the case). I have also DEP enabled..

When I reinstall the Hyper-V role and test again the system with the Intel Processor Identification Utility I see that Intel Virtualization Technology is not recognized and set to No. Hyper-V is installed and the Hypervisor is running, but I have the feeling that the VM’s are running to slow.

By the way, using the Securable tool gives the same result. Is this a normal behavior? When I disable the Vritualization Support in the Bios the tool shows that it is supported but the Hypervisor won't start...

Any advise, thanks in advance!

Hyper-V Guest (2012) Hangs during Windows Server Backup (2008)

I have a 2012 Server as a guest on a 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host. Doing Windows Server Backup hangs my Guest EVERY NIGHT. I have to "Reset" it. It doesn't effect the host, or any other machines, nor the backup. Since the machine is hung, there are no event logs in the guest or host.

It's not totally hung either. I can still get to certain IIS hosted pages and Remote Desktop will TRY to connect. but you can see that the clock on the welcome screen says "6:30" at some other time.

I am baffled!

Network Configuration for virtualized Servers

Hi everybody

I am new to virtualization and I am trying to implement 4 virtual servers on a single physical server.

The physical server is

Xeon QuadCore-1.9Ghz/24GB/600GBx5( raid5)/1xNIC

I have made new virtual machines 4 each. I want one of them to be ADDS Server. Other three are application servers.

The NIC on the physical (host)server has only Hyper-V Extensible virtual switch protocol on it. There is one more virtual adaptor created on base machine. This has IP address of 192.168.0.233/255.255.255.0. Gateway is my internet router 192.168.0.1. DNS servers IP addreses as given by my ISP.

The first VM-1 would be a ADDS /DNS server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.234/255.255.255.0

The second VM-2 would be my accounting server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.235/255.255.255.0

The third VM-3 would be my Invoicing application server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.236/255.255.255.0

The fourth VM-4 would be my Terminal Services Licensing Server. I will be connecting about 40 Thin Clients on this server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.237/255.255.255.0

The problem is :

1. I do not get access to internet through any of the VMs. I have tried putting router IP address as gateway address and IP address of my ADDS server also. Also none of my Thin Clients are able to connect to Terminal Services Server.

But I am able to ping the internet router from any of the VMs. PLs suggest proper Gateway and DNS server addresses. Would it be advisable to have separate NICs for each of the servers? There wont be more than 15 users active at a time and hence I have put only one NIC in the server.

Ghost Cluster storage, duplicated shared storage.

here is a weird problem. I have 4 node 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster. node 3 is showing two Volume2 shared storage... with differnt sizes. one of them is marked 'Not availible for placement' which is causing the real Volume2 to be marked not availible. This causes some issues with placements and such. This seems to have just happened as everything was fine.

Hey geeks, I have been working on a server for a hedge fund (hell of a task) and have run into some trouble. I need some info on on how Hyper V treats the virtualized server, when the VSwitch is external, with regards to a firewall? What I have is a host server running Windows Server 2008 and a Virtual Server (using Hyper V) running Windows Server 2003 on it.

Starting a VM while Backup runs...

Hi,

I just discovered that I cannot start (from stopped or saved state) a Hyper-v- VM while Windows Backup is doing his job.

Do I realy have to wait (can be long) that backup finishes? Is there another solution?

Isn't VSS supposed to help with this kind of issues?

Any help?

Thanks.

HyperV 2012 Core - External Virtual Switch Not Working

$

Setup a new HyperV 2012 Core installation on a Dell R720. When I setup the first 'external' virtual switch, the virtual host NIC it creates gets a 169.xxx IP Address and none of my guest VMs can access the internet. Worked fine in test environment so I'm frustrated trying to figure out what changed.

I tried to verify the NIC driver or even the extended network settings etc but since you apparently can't use Device Manager anymore I have no idea how to check/update it beyond some vague references to 'do it in powershell'.

Any ideas? I even tried assigning a secondary NIC as the external switch instead of sharing the primary and still no luck. Arg!

Looks like the same issues (w/out resolution) here:

Reinstalled host, no network connections on VM's

$

Hello
I have a problem with one of my hosts, I have read most of the posts in this forum but have not found any answer to my problem.
I reinstalled one of our hyper-v hosts (host1), win 2008 R2 core, and configured it the same way as the other hosts (host2-host5).

From host1 I can ping the other hosts, our DC and all VM's.

Now when I migrate a vm to host1, it looses connection to the network.
I have run the Cluster verification wizard without any problem on the network-test.
The Host is configured the same way as the other hosts.
In Virtual Network Manager I have set up a External Virtual Network, connected to the Nic-Team Prod Team 1 on host1.

When I migrate a vm to host1 i get this in the eventlog for host1 (in this order), I dont know if this is a normal log when migrating a vm.

Source: CPQTeamMP
Prod Team 1: PROBLEM: A Failover occurred: The Primary Network Link is down. ACTION: Please check your cabling or switch port status, or run diagnostics to test card. Also make sure all teamed NICs are on the same network.

Source: CPQTeamMP
Prod Team 1: PROBLEM: A non-Primary Network Link is being Closed. This is typically because of a PnP action, possibly it was reconfigured through Network-Properties or through HP Network Configuration Utility? Possibly it was Disabled? Possibly it is being dropped from a Team or the Team is being Dissolved? ACTION: No action is required if the described behavior is expected. Otherwise, investigate the PnP reason, possibly re-enable the miniport.

Intermittent problem live migrating VMs with no shared storage

$

I am having a rather strange problem while live migrating VMs with no shared storage on Hyper-V 2012 (core version).

If I try to live migrate (LV) between two hosts it fails. The funny thing is this problem is rather intermittent. Sometimes LV does succeed. By the way, constrained Kerberos delegation has been configured for both CISF and MS Virtual System Migration Service.

Right now, however, if I live migrate to a CSV (cluster shared volume) on the same host and THEN live migrate to the other host, it succeeds! Why?

Scenario which fails:

 1. Live Migrate a VM running on hyperv2’s local storage to hyperv4

Here is the error I get.

Scenario which succeeds:

 1. Live Migrate a VM running on hyperv2’s local storage to hyperv2’s CSV (cluster shared volume) (same server, different storage), making it essentially storage migration.
 2. Then live migrate the same VM running on hyperv2 to hyperv4

Can someone please help!

Hey there,

in a Server 2012 Cluster there is a VM with Server 2003 Ent. SP2 x86 with dynamic Memory which hangs in a bootloop. There is no Bluescreen or something like this. Change it to static memory, everything is fine.

tried:
- reinstalled the Integration Services
- exported and imported the VM
- installed older integration services
no changes to the behavior of the VM in startprocess.

Can anyone help with a solution?

Thanks!

Number of network on a cluster

$

Hi,

What is best pratice when it comes to number of network that we should configure when we are setting up a Hyper-V cluster.

2 Hyper-v hosts, connected with Fibre Channel

Should I configure 2 network, one for administration of the HyperV hosts, and 1 network for for virtual machines ?

I have also seen that there are created a own network for migration... is this so the virtual machine network is not affected ?

Another thing, we have configure nic team on the physical nic, but should we also configure nic team on the nic for virtual machines ?

Thanks for answers.

I am implementing a new 3 node cluster and have designed the following network configuration across all three hosts.

Can any one advise if it is good to go

Host Management and Windows Failover Cluster adaptors will have a direct connection to the LAN.

NICs 0 X 4 = Host Management and Windows Failover Cluster

NICs 1 X 5 = Live Migration (Virtual Switch 1)

NICs 2 X 6 = Corporate Virtual Machine Network One (Virtual
Switch 2)

NICs 3 X 7 = Corporate Virtual Machine Network Two (Virtual
Switch 3)

NICs 4 X 8 = DMZ Virtual Machine Network (Virtual Switch 4) (will
be decommissioned once empty)

Storage is fibre channel based.

Hyper-V guests loses drive configuration after Hyper-V host reboot

$

Hello almighty and powerful admins,

I have a windows 2008 domain and i am curious, when you reboot a Hyper-V Host the guest VM loose their dirve configurations. What I mean is when I add the drive(s) to the local 2008 R2 server Computer>Manage>Disk Configuration then offline them so I can then go back to my guest VM and map them why when rebooting the Host does this configuration disappear?

Is there a way if the host loses power or in my case server maintenance (reboot), the "mapping" of the disks always stay intact with the specific server they are mapped to.

Thanks

Initial NIC configuration not working with VLAN

$

Hi

I have just installed my first Hyper-V server and have started to run through the initial configuration. This is a Hyper-V 2012 only server, so the console is just the command interface.

I get to option 8 (Set up networking) and set a static IP address, mask, gateway and DNS. The NIC in question is physically connected to a switch port (CISCO) that is configured with VLAN 123 (the IP range for the VLAN is 10.0.25.0/24) with the ip address of 10.0.25.76.

Everything looks OK, the switch can see it is connected, but I cannot ping or connect in or out to the IP address.

What do I need to configure on the server so that it can connect to VLAN 123, do I need to do some additional configuration before I can connect to the network?

Thanks

Kevin
