Network Configuration for virtualized Servers

Hi everybody

I am new to virtualization and I am trying to implement 4 virtual servers on a single physical server.

The physical server is

Xeon QuadCore-1.9Ghz/24GB/600GBx5( raid5)/1xNIC

I have made new virtual machines 4 each. I want one of them to be ADDS Server. Other three are application servers.

The NIC on the physical (host)server has only Hyper-V Extensible virtual switch protocol on it. There is one more virtual adaptor created on base machine. This has IP address of 192.168.0.233/255.255.255.0. Gateway is my internet router 192.168.0.1. DNS servers IP addreses as given by my ISP.

The first VM-1 would be a ADDS /DNS server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.234/255.255.255.0

The second VM-2 would be my accounting server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.235/255.255.255.0

The third VM-3 would be my Invoicing application server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.236/255.255.255.0

The fourth VM-4 would be my Terminal Services Licensing Server. I will be connecting about 40 Thin Clients on this server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.237/255.255.255.0

The problem is :

1. I do not get access to internet through any of the VMs. I have tried putting router IP address as gateway address and IP address of my ADDS server also. Also none of my Thin Clients are able to connect to Terminal Services Server.

But I am able to ping the internet router from any of the VMs. PLs suggest proper Gateway and DNS server addresses. Would it be advisable to have separate NICs for each of the servers? There wont be more than 15 users active at a time and hence I have put only one NIC in the server.

RAID management/monitoring on HP MicroServer with Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

I'm thinking the answer is 'no', but I would like closure whether it's possible. I have a HP MicroServer, which is a basic server to say the least. It has on onboard RAID controller and can do RAID1.

HP offers no drivers/utilities out of the box, and I haven't seen any RAID array management/monitoring. If I deploy Server 2008 or Hyper-V, how will I know when a disk fails or the mirror breaks without going into the BIOS level RAID controller and viewing the RAID array there? I'm guessing the only way I can monitor a RAID1 array is if I create a soft array in Windows, which I rather not do.

Cheers

Hyper-V 3.0

Hello,

I'm currently building out a Hyper-v 3.0 lab for a POC.  We currently have three data centers and would like to test site to site fail over and vm replication.  My plan is to build three 2 node clusters at each data center.  I was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me.

1) Since this is a lab is there a way to do shared local storage or NAS/SAN the only way on each cluster?

2)  Is three separate cluster the best way? or should it be one cluster for all three data centers?

3) To demonstrate site-failover and vm replication, is there anything else I need besides what I stated above? System center?

Thank you for your help!

Hyper-V Migration Wizard in combination with SCVMM migrating form Hyper-V2008R2 to 21012: error because of SCVMM

$

We would like to migrate 40+ VM's from our 2008R2 Hyper-V cluster to our new 2012 Hyper-V cluster.
For this we use the Cluster Migration Wizard found in the Hyper-V2012 cluster manager.

We started a test scenario before actually migrating, to ensure that we can resolve any issues before doing this on our production environment.
Unfortunately we have run into a problem: we believe this may have to do with SCVMM. Let me explain:

When we create a VM on our old cluster and migrate it using the wizard, everything works fine (tested a number of times); we can start the VM. However, when we do the same with a VM that was created using SCVMM on the old cluster, and then migrate it; the VM won't start.

In the Hyper-V section of the Server manager we see the following events:

19610: 'name' could not be realized due to errors in its configuration file which could not be resolved.

17030: Virtual machine 'TEST-VM02' is assigned to an authorization scope that is not defined in the policy store: 'fb6d85ff-e910-446d-a954-eb844130e239'. The virtual machine will be reassigned to the default authorization scope. (Virtual machine ID A3AE6456-7C29-4DD4-963F-E1C5D2A8436A)

This last error leads us to believe that this may be linked to the fact that SCVMM uses a different folder for the Authorisation Manager store, more details:http://kb.prismmicrosys.com/evtpass/evtpages/EventId_17030_Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS_62946.asp

Unfortunately all our VM's on the old cluster have been created using SCVMM, and as such are affected. It would appear that the Hyper-V Cluster Migration Wizard is not 'SCVMM aware'.

What can we do to continue our migration?

0x800705AA "insufficient memory "- but that's not true, what is wrong?

Hey guys,

one of our Hyper-V hosts just started to act up, it is a Windows Server 2008 R2 server. Two virtual machines were shut down

by local IT - and they could not get them to start again. And neither can we, unfortunately, we are getting this error:

[Window Title]
Hyper-V Manager

[Main Instruction]
An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).
[Content]
'xxx' failed to start.Unable to allocate 768 MB of RAM: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. (0x800705AA)

[Expanded Information]
'enteotest' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID xxx)
'enteotest' is unable to allocate 768 MB of RAM: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine ID xxx)

The thing is - everything worked fine for months, years even. The host has 64 GB RAM, 25 of which are allocated to VMs via Hyper-V Manager. The task manager shows this:

Total 65516
Cached 1873
Available 30716
Free 29094

There is no Antivirus, there is no "googlecrashhandler". I am clueless. I cannot simply reboot the Host, it's productive. And the machines that are still on all work fine, I really do not want to risk to "lose" more of them.

My searches either brought up topics where "googlecrashhandler" was the cause - or where no sultion was ever presented except for a hotfix for Server 2008 that does not apply here.

Anyone got an idea?!

Regards

Chris

Hyper V Sizing

Team,

I am new to virtualization. We have 2008R2 Hyper V servers.

We have two processors and each proc. with 6 cores. So that gives me 12 cores on Hyper V server. All VM's will be also 2008R2SP1 OS.

So how many VM's (with 1 Virtual proc each) can we build on this hyper V server?

Is it 1 Physical Core = 1 Virtual processor?

Hyper-V replica and disaster recovery

We are testing Hyper-V (2012) replica as a multi site disaster recovery solution.
So far planned failover works perfectly, but what if the primary Hyper-V host or even the primary site goes down?
The primary site and backup site is connected through a site-to-site VPN connection and resides on different subnets.
What solution or mechanism would you recommend to make the clients reach the VM's at the DR site in case the primary Hyper-V host or site becomes unavailable?

How To Compact Disk on SCSI Controller

$

Hello,

My Server 2008 R2 virtual server on Server 2008 R2 host has 3 hard drives: C: on IDE controller 50GB, D: on SCSI controller 1TB and E: on SCSI controller. There is data on the E: volume so I am trying to non-destructively compact the E: disk from 500GB to 250GB. However, when I shut down the VM, and edit the hard drive, the only options are convert or expand. I note the hard drive on the IDE controller (C:) has the 'compact' option available.

How can I compact the hard disk within the VMM interface and then in local disk mgmt within the VM GUI itself?

Thanks,

Scott

What?!?! Hyper V worked in 2008 R2 but not in 2012?!?! Incorrect function.

I have a new server 2012 upgrade (yes, I did upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2012 - it DOES work) and I'm banging my head on the wall because of this darned Hyper-V.

Hyper-V worked just fine in 2008 R2, but after the upgrade it not only made me reinstall the role and I lost my VMs, but after importing them none of them will start. I get an "Incorrect Function" message, and thru some digging it made me think that my hardware (Intel S3000AHLX motherboard with a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 @ 2.66 GHz) was to fault, but (1) it worked before dangit, and (2) Intel's site confirms that both support VT. I even double-checked in the BIOS that it's still turned on.

I thought it might be my VMs after having to reimport, even went as far as to recreate them with the same VHDs. I even tried to create a new one. Same "Incorrect Function" message.

I checked in the VMMS event log, and its throwing error message %%2147942401 and error code 0x80070001.

Again - it worked before the upgrade!!

Hello - Im new here and reasonably new MCT.  I have to run a 6292 course for the first time soon.

I have installed server 2008 and Hyper-v role and installed all the images to the server and imported them to hyper-v as per instructions. I have doubled checked all files required are there.

I cannot get the images to run and I am getting the following error;

microsoft emulated IDE controller {instance ID ....} failed to power on with error 'one or more arguments are invalid'

Failed to open attachment ". Error:'one or more arguments are invalid'

Failed to open attachment ". Error:'one or more arguments are invalid'

Can anyone help me out and shed any light as to what may be wrong?

Thanks

Iain

Adding Virtual Machines to a cluster but they don't show in the Roles

$

Hello,

I'm new to the clustering and I had a stand alone server with 8 Virtuals running on it.  I create a cluster and joined this server to the cluster. I first tried to figure out how to move the vmachines in to cluster and gave up.  So I just deleted them in Hyper-V manager and copied the vhdx to the LUN on my cluster and went to Roles and clicked New Virtual Machine and selected the hard drive and all seem to work as excepted. Then I noticed the Machine showed back up in Hyper-V manager is that normal? So then I tried this same approach on a second server it seemed to work but the Vmachine does not get added to the Roles only the first machine is listed in the Roles on the Cluster. It does show in the Hyper-V manager.  Am I missing something?

What I have it a two node cluster both running server 2012  with a P2000 G3 storage.

Thanks

Randy

DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER (f7)
A driver has overrun a stack-based buffer.  This overrun could potentially
allow a malicious user to gain control of this machine.
DESCRIPTION
A driver overran a stack-based buffer (or local variable) in a way that would
have overwritten the function's return address and jumped back to an arbitrary
address when the function returned.  This is the classic "buffer overrun"
hacking attack and the system has been brought down to prevent a malicious user
from gaining complete control of it.
Do a kb to get a stack backtrace -- the last routine on the stack before the
buffer overrun handlers and bugcheck call is the one that overran its local
variable(s).
Arguments:
Arg1: fffff88000e3d9b0, Actual security check cookie from the stack

Hyper-V 3.0 Performance

$

I am the new system administrator at the company I work for. When I started they ran all Citrix Xenserver 6.1 Free Edition for Hypervisors. I came from a company that used all Microsoft so I have been pushing for Hyper-v 3.0 here really hard. I set up two identical hosts one running Xenserver 6.1 and the other Hyper-v 3.0 core. I installed identical VMs on each host, using OSs from my TechNet subscription. I was very very disappointed when the VM on the Citrix Xenserver continuously ran faster. I really want to use Hyper-v because it is so much easier for us to manage. However, my supervisors are not convinced because of the performance hit the VMs were experience. I have updated the bios on each machine, updated the drivers, installed all updates from Microsoft, disabled chimney offload on the NICs, and still Hyper-v is much slower. At one point my boss thought I was in denial that Citrix was the way to go. So this is certainly not me bashing Hyper-V. Is there anything else other than drivers, BIOS, and Microsoft Updates that could be causing such degradation in speed? I have tried this test on two different machines. The first was on ASUS servers. When I didn’t get the results I wanted I switched to Dell Servers, R710s, and the results Are the same. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Dell R710 - Server 2012 - Hyper-v Role won't install

I've installed Server 2012 Standard on a Dell R710 server and I can't get the Hyper-v role to install. It has the roles of ADDS, DNS, File Server, and IIS. Goes through the process of install and says a reboot is required to finish the installation. During Windows reboot it say's "failure configuring windows features, reverting changes"....then boots w/o Hyper-v installed. I have the latest (6.0.7) bios and have Virtualization turned on. I have a pair of nic's teamed for the DC, a 3rd enabled and a 4th disabled. I selected the 3rd enabled single nic for the Hyper-v in the config. Any ideas?

Thanks

Mark

Open/save file slow in hyper v

Hi every one!

I'm trying to search other forum but seem no luck.

I'm using Dell Power edge t620 with windows server 2008 R2 and Hyper-v and all network card is Gigabit.

In Host machine i just installed symantec antivirus client.  and Have 2 guest machine:

1 Domain controller + file sharing

2 Symantec antivirus server

both guest server is windows server 2008 R2 with separate IP and NIC.

I've joined windows 7 client to DC and I can copy file speed up to 3MBs but when I open file like word or excel it's very slow.

for example when I open or save file from a map drive to DC I see at the bottom bar of excel is "Downloading XXX.elsx".
so any one here can help me to speed up when open and save file?

Note: I plugged network cable of host and all guest to the same switch and all network card have separate IP

I'm really appreciate with your help, Thank you.

Virtual Ethernet Adapter needs to be disabled and enabled upon startup of PC

I successfully created a Hyper-V Virtual Switch using Hyper-V Manager. I have successfully setup and run a Hyper-V Virtual Machine on my Windows 8 PC.

I have one problem that I have not been able to solve. Each morning, when I power on my PC and login, the Status of IPv4 Connectivity shows "No network access". I have to Disable and Enable the "Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter" before my PC (Host Windows OS) gets network connectivity. After I do that, I have no further issues until the next morning when I power on my PC again. So far, I have not found anything the event logs or in my searching of MSDN or TechNet that would help me solve this issue.
Thanks

These are the items enabled (checked) for the Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter :
Client for Microsoft Networks
Symantec Network Security Intermediate Filter Driver
Deterministic Network Enhancer
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Microsoft LLDP Protocol Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

The driver is VMSWITCH.SYS File Version 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247) Driver Date: 6/21/2006
I have a static IP Address configured in the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties.

The wired LAN card (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller) is a separate item in "Network Connections" with only "Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch" checked.

Host Hypervisor 2008R2 (32GB, 8-way) , guest 2008R2 Standard (2GB 2-way), all updates applied.

Every time I try to attach a drive to the SCSI controller the guest immediately crashes.

STOP 0x3b (0x0000000080000003, 0xFFFFF800014DFBD8, 0xFFFFF8800639F730,0x0000000000000000)

Any advice would be useful.

Hyper-v 2012 replica fixed to dynamic possible?

I am looking at using Hyper-V replica to replicate my customers machines to a data center.  All my customers run fixed disks.  Can replica when replicating instead of sending them over as fixed disks, instead send them over as dynamic disks?  My reason is my current customers have about 2 terabytes of used space in fixed disks. It would be crazy for it to send all of the unused space as part of the fixed disk.   It would be fantastic if the DR location to where replica is sending the data could store the images as dynamic disk thereby saving a tremendous amount of space!  I hope this is possible.
