I am getting an error expanding a 14 TB vhd to 18 TB. The server is 2008 R2 SP1 with all patches applied. Here are the commands and error below.

I have cretaed two VMs with 12 GB RAM each in hyperv2008 stand alon server (the phisycal box has arround 96 Gb RAM.). Now my question is when i powered on both of the VM it autometically creates bin file for each VM with 12 GB size each. If i am assigning static RAM to VMS thn what is the requirment of the swap file which is consuming equal to the RAM size assigned on every VM. Please let me know if there is any option to disable this in Hyper v for VM?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but before I go about trying to implement this, can anyone tell me any problems I might encounter or if this is even a good idea.  I'm trying to setup a test lab to learn Hyper-V.  Here is how I'm thinking of implementing this into my current environment.

Install Hyper-V on a dedicated system with an Intel i5 processor.  Run Hyper-V in a workgroup as no Domain yet exists.  Then install Windows Server 2012 on a virtual machine in Hyper-V and promote it to be a domain controller.  Since the Hyper-V system always runs before the DC is available, it can really never be a part of the Domain correct?  I mean if the DC isn't booted and I need to log in to Hyper-V, it won't authenticate because the credentials can't be verified, is that thinking correct?  Is this possible?  I know ideally that I should have a hardware DC available that's not virtualized and have the Hyper-V join it, but in my environment, this is not possible.

Any input is appreciated.

Hi

Just looking for some real world file speed examples

My setup is all HP, 3 DL380pG8 HP SV4330 HP 5120 L3 switches (1GB)

I have jumbo frames enabled end to end on iSCSI, LM CSV networks

I'm getting 107 MB/s when copying a large vhd 70GB from the CSV to Local Disk

I'M getting 186MB/s when copying to the CSV from local disk

Are these speeds normal, good or bad for 1GB iSCSI?

All file copy tests initiated from CSV disk owner node

Cluster is Server 2012

Cluster, IPV 4 & 6 only ticked on iSCSI nics

I have a machine with a single NIC HOST

Primary IP Address:70.38.11.215

Subnet mask:255.255.255.224

gateway:70.38.11.193

On this same machine I have a secondary IP Address :70.38.4.144

subnet mask :255.255.255.255

The host machine connects to the internet fine. I am also able to remote desktop into the machine

I have added HYper V Role.

Now I create a virtual Machine using Hyper V Manager

IP addresss:70.38.4.145

subnet mask :255.255.255.255

gateway:70.38.4.144

The virtual machine is unable to connect to the Internet. 

Please let me know what I am doing wrong and what network diagnostics I can

Here is the scenario:

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V Server and we have a problem with the VSS writer on the server.  The problem is seen when attempting to perform backups on the machine (we have used Symantec Backup-Exec as well as Acronis).  When a backup starts on the host, the job just freezes and no information is reported on the server doing the backups except that it times out.  On the Hyper-V host, when doing a "VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" command, everything comes back as: State: [1] Stable, Last error: No error, when no backup has been attempted however when you have attempted a backup, it just freezes and doesn't report back anything at all.  In order to fix the freezing a reboot of the host is required.  Additionally, on the reboots I've noticed a stream of "Hyper-V-Integration-Data-Exchange" errors (Event 4096), Hyper-V-Integration-Data-Exchange) - The Data Exchange integration services is either not enabled, not running or not initialized."  (This is only seen during a reboot.)

I have a Hyper-V server set up but under roles and hyper-v it says I need to add a virtual machine. I go to my manager and I have the machine up and running but it does not recognize it.

Hi,

I am confused about the licensing options with the Windows Server 2012 Std 2CPU/2VM

What I understand is that if I install the OS as a host, I will be able to install the same license for 2 virtual machines of Windows Server 2012.

But now what happens if I use Hyper-V Server 2012 as a host OS? Will I be able to install 3 virtual instances of Windows Server 2012 with one license?

If not, I would rather install Windows Server 2012 as a host and gain better VM management since the host would only run Hyper-V under my setup.

Hi all,

I have 3 x VM's running at work on a box, each machine has been given 16gb RAM allocated.

My confusion is, when a VM starts and becomes idle, the memory usage levels out and stays the same (as you would expect).  However when an application is launched, and the Memory usage is used, it is never 'released' when the application exits.  So ultimately, over the course of the day the memory in use will display 99% and will never drop.  There are never any warning issues and no applications fail to perform, but I just find this odd behaviour....

Is this normal behavior?  Can anybody explain the logic behind this?

I have two windows 2012 Server machines which, eventually will be highly available Hyper-V hosts.

Right now I am trying to get my first client server installed. The OS (Also Server 2012) installed with no problems. When I try to connect to the network however I cannot.

In the client OS I can see the network card, and I can bind IP's, and they SAY they are bound and all is well, however I can only ping 127.0.0.1 and nothing else.

This is what my network card settings look like:

If I do an IPConfig I see this:

As you can see, in one place my server has the correct IP's, gateways etc. to be able to see other computers in the domain (which it cannot join yet because it CAN'T see any other computers) and in the other it is as if the network settings were never set.

I have two network cards in the host server, each has two NIC ports. One card has two ports on our 'regular' network (all traffic except to the SAN) and one has two ports to the SAN network (no traffic goes here except back and forth to the SAN).

I have a third image I wanted to post so I will continue in the next post...

Hi All,

I have 5 pooled collections which are a mix of personal and pooled.  All 5 say status unknown  .  Server manager shows no errors.

Any ideas ?

Use SAVE STATE for VSS application installed machine.

I have hyper-v srv2008r2 SP1 as HOST. 

i have VSS application for file version management. i have installed that application in hyper-v guest 

other guest are configured to save state. so my question is can i configured SAVE STATE settigns for vss installed machine

I have setup a 3 node test cluster with win2012 everything works great but one thing I noticed.

I don't see way to have cluster disks failback. They move to another node without any issue when the owner goes down but, once they move to that node they stay there unless you move them or that node also fails. I am wondering if this is even a big deal, Is it a best practice in 2012 to have the CSV owned by the same node that all the VMs stored on it run? I wouldn't want to end up with all the CSV in one location or randomly scattered when putting nodes in maintenance mode in VMM.

Hi

I am trying to create a script which will copy a vhdx file and create a new vm using the hyperv cmdlets however I keep getting the following error message on the memorymaximumbytes

cannot bind parameter memorymaximumbytes. cannot convert value "4GB" to type "System.Int64". Error: "Input was not in correct format"

I have the 4GB value bound to a variable of $maxmem which is prompted for using the read-host cmdlet.

Any ideas on how I can get this working?

Hi,

Is there a way to attach a USB hdd to a hyper-v that is is part of failover cluster ? All i see under SCSI controller option as the disk is the one from the DAS device (storage array), i did like to attach usb disk as well to the hyper-v. It's in offline state but it is not recognized by the hyper - v in cluster.

It's like the scsi controller is the storage array only and the usb disk is not part of it.

OS : 2008 R2, array dell md 3200 (not the iscsi model)

Hi,

I have a Win 8 Pro Installed. I have activated Hyper-V and then installed Win Server 2012 on to VM.

My queries are related to setting up Active Directory in order to avoid DNS issue related to static IP.

I want to have AD running on Win Server 2012 & Sharepoint & TFS running on another VM so that they can talk to each other. Everything running on my own Single Desktop.

Kindly assist me how to setup so that it should work as if in different network.

Two errors I'm receiving when trying to migrate a VM from a non-clustered Hyper V environment to a Clustered HA Hyper V environment.

1) The Virtual machine requires a highly available virtual switch connection and the host network adapter is not attached to a highly available virtual Switch.

2) There currently are not network adapters with network optimization available on host XYZ.

Ive done some googling and get seem to solve the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just downloaded the updated version of MOC 20410 and none of the 8 vm's included will import.  I receive the following error (but note that {GUID}s are unique for each machine):

Failed to import a virtual machine

Import file format error: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Learning\20410\Drives\20410B-LON-CL1\Virtual Machines\{GUID}.exp

I get the same error for the remaining 7 machines:

LON-CL2, LON-DC1, LON-RTR, LON-CORE, LON-SVR1, LON-SVR2, LON-SVR3

I have to get this setup and imaged for a delivery of 24 students on June 10th

On a side note, I have been an MCT for many years and have delivered hundreds of classes that I have setup personally, so yes, I followed the HVS document! I am also responsible for the setup of classes at our training company and this is a show stopper.  I have seen some links referring to a <VALUE></VALUE> key that should be blank where <PROPERTY NAME="ScopeOfResidence" TYPE="string"> is found in the exp file, and these are already blank so the information athttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/968968?wa=wsignin1.0 is of no help.
