Hyper-V reports: The operation on computer 'localhost' failed. - Cannot manage VM's.

Hello,

I have two Windows 2008 x64 servers, running Hyper-V.  I have about 15 VM's on each server.  I manage the VM's all through the Hyper-V Manager.  When I try to connect to Hyper-V Manager and manage my VM's I get "Connecting to Virtual Machine Management Service."  This times out after a few minutes and then the Hyper-V Manager displays:  The operation on computer 'localhost' failed.

This happens about 2-3 weeks after a reboot.  The only fix I have found is to reboot the server, but since these are production servers this is kind of a pain.

Hello,

I have the following scenario:

The HostServer have instaled Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V Manager, and the FileServer and SQLServer are Virtual Machines. The FileServer are a Domain Controler and have the user shares.SQLServer have SQL 2008 R2 instaled with the databases from many programs. The disks from the virtual servers are dynamic expandable, in a lab i run a desfragmentation from the SQLServer disk, and the virtual machine Paused, because it becomes running out of free space, i turn off the Virtual Machine, then i run a Compact of the disk, one of the SQL Databases become in Suspect mode when the SQLServer starts...What causes this behaviour? The desfrag of the disk? The Compact procedure? What can i do to prevent this behaviour on a production enviroment?

Help is apreciated!!!

Many Thanks in advance!!!

How to run VM with low resources?

Hello,

I have win srv 2012 + sp 2013 virtual machine that worked fine on my previous laptop with good resources.

I tried to run it on my new laptop (intel i3, 2.4GHz, 4Gb RAM).

The problem is that somehow, although the server is working,  the SharePoint is not: stuck or "unexpected error" for sites and central admin.

Event Viewer contains some errors but nothing particular (for my opinion).

The only thing I can think about is memory \ CPU issue.

My questions are:

1. Can anyone help me? :)

2. Is there are any changes that I need to do on VM (like increase timeouts)?

I will glad to supply any further information.

PS Please, don't let this topic to be in "No Replies" category..

Hyper-V on Windows server 2012 Guest Failover Clustering

Hey,

I have 2 Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition servers running Hyper-V on them. On each host I have a server that I am trying to setup guest clustering for a fileserver and they both are sharing the drive via iSCSI. But when I try to create the cluster it fails on the forming cluster step. However when I have the nodes on the same Hyper-V host I am able to successfully create the cluster. When I had it working on one host I migrated the VM to the second host and the cluster service on that server failed. Any ideas on what it could be?

Hyper-v Take cluster name offline

Just a quick question regarding taking the cluster name offline. I need to take it offline to change it's IP address.

Does this cause the running VM's to go offline, can I safely take the cluster name offline to change the IP address without disrupting the VM's?

thanks

Cluster Network

Hi,

We were running 2x3 node Hyper-V 2012 cluster and added a 4th node to both clusters. Most VM workloads have been running as expected on the 4th node of either cluster and at one point I saw 120 VM’s running on one of them node with no reported issues. Now it gets a little strange because we have a couple of VM’s that run in a failover cluster and if any one of the cluster nodes runs on Hyper-V node 4 its reported as down in cluster manager.

We have been running 2x3 node Hyper-V 2012 clusters since the release of SCVMM SP1 now with no issues. We are using Logical switches and all switches have 2 network adaptors assigned.

The process used for adding both node 4’s  was;

Our hardware is Cisco UCS using B230 M2 blades All hardware was purchased at the same time and all 4 blades in each cluster are running from the same service profile template therefore there should be no discrepancies in the hardware presented to windows from one blade to the next.

Thanks in advance for any help

Error exporting Hyper-V VM

I am running 2 VMs in Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. But am running out of space on the partition where the VMs were created. I have another larger partition on the same Hyper-V server and want to move the VMs to this larger partition.

I was able to successfully export one of the VMs to the larger partion and import it succesfully. The process ran perfectly.

However when I try to export the second VM the following error is is generated...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error occured while attempting to export the virtual machine.
Export filed for virtual machine 'SALVO'.
Export failed for virtual machine 'SALVO'
(41322DFC-B316-4CF8-9B19-7753078F0D4B) with error 'The system cannot find the file specified.' (0x80070002).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What can I do to resolve this error. The VM is functioning fine. I don't understand why I am not able to export it. At one point in time I did have a second vhd attached to the system. But I removed it long ago and there were no observable side effects.

Thanks, David

Hyper-v 3.0 replicated server - specify location of replicated VHD drives?

$

Hi all,

I have two identical servers with lots of quick storage (direct attached storage, however, not a SAN, NAS etc.), both with Server 2012/hyper-v 3.0 installed. I'm hosting an SQL server VM on server A (source) and I want the replication to to go to server B (target).

However, on server B, I'd like to be able to define the volumes where the replicated VHDs reside. The virtual server will be a SQL server, so there's a data partition, log file partition, etc. which I'd like to have mapped identically on server B. No one volume has the capacity to store the equivalent data of the combined data set of server A.

Is this possible at all?

Thanks in advance.

Starting a VM while Backup runs...

Hi,

I just discovered that I cannot start (from stopped or saved state) a Hyper-v- VM while Windows Backup is doing his job.

Do I realy have to wait (can be long) that backup finishes? Is there another solution?

Isn't VSS supposed to help with this kind of issues?

Any help?

Thanks.

Unable to map disk to my VM

Hi,

This is a Windows Server 2012, Failover Clusters.

Using the Failover Clusters UI, I click on "Settings" on my virtual machine, select my SCSI Controller, and click Add Disk.

A create "New", VHDx, Fixed, on my shared volumes.

When the Wizard is over, I click Apply and I get an error "The disk is already connect to the virtual machine..."

I can reproduce using PowerShell:

openSUSE 12.03 only gives 800x600 display resolution capability in Microsoft Hyper-V virtual box

$

I have just installed openSUSE 12.03 in a virtual machine box under Microsoft Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro.

I attempted to change the resolution from 800x600 to something more acceptable, but under Display and Monitor configuration, there are no other options than 800x600.

Microsoft's website says that openSUSE 12.1 is a supported operating system with their Integration Services built in. This should, I would think allow me to utilize the full range of resolutions for the display adapter in my machine. I say this because all my other guest operating system installations work fine with the complete range of resolutions available for my display.

I have also installed Ubuntu 12.04 and CentOS 6.4 as well as Windows XP, Vista and 7 and none of these other installs gives me similar problems.

Is there a known problem with openSUSE in a Hyper-V V-Box with respect to resolution?  I have noticed several similar posts in my web searches, but no good answers that shed light on this problem that is apparently not mine alone.

I am running an Intel Core i3-3220 with an Intel B75 chipset motherboard that uses the Intel default graphics available through that board/cpu on the physical system.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer

Packets sent out the wrong Interface on Hyper-V 2012 Failover Cluster

$

Here is some background information:
2 Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V in a Failover Cluster environment.  Each has:
1 NIC for Live Migration 192.168.80.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for Cluster Communication 192.168.90.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for iscsi 192.168.100.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for host management with a routable public IP (*connected to corp network) w/ gateway on this interface
1 NIC for Virtual Machine traffic (*connected to corp network)
All NICs are up, we can ping the IPs between servers on the private network and on the public facing networks.  All functions of hyper-v are working and the failover cluster reports all interfaces are up and we receive no errors.  Live migration works fine.  In the live migration settings i have restricted the use of the 2 NICs (live migration or cluster comm).

My problem is that our networking/security group sees on occasion (about every 10 minutes with a few other packets thrown in at different times) syn packets that are destined for the 192.168.80.3 interface goes out of the public interface and is dropped at our border router.  These should be heading out of the 192.168.80.x or 192.168.90.x interfaces without ever hitting our corporate network. Anyone have an idea of why this might be happening?  Traffic is on TCP 445.

Appreciate the help.
Nate

hyper-v using saved state

I just found out that one of my servers is backed up by DPM using saved state.

I finally found out the reason! The OS disk is dynamic.

Is there any way to fix it and change it to basic without destroying the OS partition?

Thank you.

Replica Question

$

Hi

We are in the early planning and testing stages of migrating our virtual servers from vSphere 4.1 to Hyper-V 3.0

We have two sites, at the moment Site A has all of our vSphere hosts and virtual machines.  Shortly we will have all new hardware (EqualLogic SAN, Hosts, Switches etc) installed at Site B.  My problem is that I need to convert to HV quickly and with minimal downtime at geographically diverse locations.

Thankfully Site A & B are connected via a 100Mbps fibre link.  Early conversion testing shows that converting machines over a link this slow would be very time consuming.  Therefore I was considering converting a machine to HV at Site A and then replicating them to Site B.

I understand from reading technical documentation that in a Planned Failover scenario the virtual machine is shutdown and then replicated to the replica host.  If I were to do this can the machine now failed over to Site B using a Planned Failover become the "Live" server or will it forever be a Replica?

Once everything is converted to Site B I will reconfigure the hardware at Site A as a Replica site.  So once I have failed over a Replica can I then re-set up Replication to a new host on Site B?

Many thanks

Hyper-V Replication move hrl file to another location

Hi,

We are using Hyper-V replication in our environment.

I was wondering if it is possible to separate the .hrl (Hyper-V Replication Log) to another location (other set of disks), than the vhdx?

Also, if you can tell me how we can achieve that, it will be great.

Thank you!
