Performance differences

I have an application on a Server 2012 Hosted 2008 R2 VM that performs roughly 1/5 the speed of the same application on a Server 2008 R2 hosted VM.  Because the application software is the same, I suspect this is due to differences in the environments.  Each machine is assigned 4 processors, the 2012 hosted VM has 48 GB RAM while the faster 2008 VM has 32 GB.  FWIW, the application is WSS 3.0 based and involves a timer job that loads data into a list.  I am getting 5 x the number of records per minute on the 2008 VM. SQL tracing is not showing me any long running queries.

Any tips on how I can confirm or rule out the VM?  The host server itself is mostly idle.

Intermittent problem live migrating VMs with no shared storage

I am having a rather strange problem while live migrating VMs with no shared storage.

If I try to live migrate (LV) between two hosts it fails. The funny thing is this problem is rather intermittent. Sometimes LV does succeed. By the way, constrained Kerberos delegation has been configured for both CISF and MS Virtual System Migration Service.

Right now, however, if I live migrate to a CSV (cluster shared volume) on the same host and THEN live migrate to the other host, it succeeds! Why?

Scenario which fails:

  1. Live Migrate a VM running on hyperv2’s local storage to hyperv4

Here is the error I get.

Scenario which succeeds:

  1. Live Migrate a VM running on hyperv2’s local storage to hyperv2’s CSV (cluster shared volume) (same server, different storage), making it essentially storage migration.
  2. Then live migrate the same VM running on hyperv2 to hyperv4

Can someone please help!

very slow connection to VM from Hyper-V manager on Windows 8

windows 8;   Client Hyper-V enabled;   added Hyper-V host (server 2012)

Take a long time to connect to VM.

Another bad symptom: when open HV Manager, local host appears immediately but added previously Host appears after delay.

Didn't see this problem on W7. Firewall is disabled. Have Trend Micro AV installed. But the problem appeared before AV install. And theoretically should be no conflict between Windows Defender and installed AV.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Michael.

I am planning the migration of our 2008 R2 SP1 cluster to 2012 and will be using the Cluster Migration Wizard for the move.  Do I need to delete all my existing VM snapshots before migrating?

Failure Moving VM to 2012 Cluster

I am having a problem moving VMs from our standalone 2012 Hyper-V boxes to the cluster.  If I try to do a move from a standalone to a cluster node it goes through the entire move process (very slowly compared to how long it takes to do a 'shared nothing' move beteween standalone hosts) and fails at the end with "Virtual machine migration failed at migration source" and "Failed to establish a connection because the destination host rejected the request: element not found."  The error code is 0x80070490.  This must happen after the migration is almost complete beacuse if I look at the destination folder it has the right size VHDs there.  I have tried migrating the storage to the CSV and also to the local direct attatched storage on the target host.

Strangely enough if I do the move from SCVMM it works and it also automatically sets the VM up as a cluster resource.  I don't mind using SCVMM but it would be nice to know what's tripping me up on the other front.  Any assistance would be most appreciated!

Adding Virtual Machines to a cluster but they don't show in the Roles

Hello,

I'm new to the clustering and I had a stand alone server with 8 Virtuals running on it.  I create a cluster and joined this server to the cluster. I first tried to figure out how to move the vmachines in to cluster and gave up.  So I just deleted them in Hyper-V manager and copied the vhdx to the LUN on my cluster and went to Roles and clicked New Virtual Machine and selected the hard drive and all seem to work as excepted. Then I noticed the Machine showed back up in Hyper-V manager is that normal? So then I tried this same approach on a second server it seemed to work but the Vmachine does not get added to the Roles only the first machine is listed in the Roles on the Cluster. It does show in the Hyper-V manager.  Am I missing something?

What I have it a two node cluster both running server 2012  with a P2000 G3 storage.

Thanks

Randy

Creating a XP VM in Windows 8

I recently performed a p2v of my current XP SP3 machine and tried to create it as a vm in windows 8. I was successful in creating a vhd file and the machine starts up. the issue I am having is the External Virtual Switch I created doesn't want to give an IP address or connect. The windows 8 machine connects to the internet and to all my local servers. The VS has an IP and I have tried setting a reservation in DHCP for the new vm. Has anyone seen this happen or is there something I am missing?

Thanks

Hi,

I have a Win 8 Pro Installed. I have activated Hyper-V and then installed Win Server 2012 on to VM.

My queries are related to setting up Active Directory in order to avoid DNS issue related to static IP.

I want to have AD running on Win Server 2012 & Sharepoint & TFS running on another VM so that they can talk to each other. Everything running on my own Single Desktop.

Kindly assist me how to setup so that it should work as if in different network.

Thanks,

Kino

How to configure one NIC dedicated for the management OS (Win2012)

$

Hi All,

On this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj735302.aspx#bkmk_1 the management OS has one NIC dedicated. It is used for LiveMigration, CSV and Management.

My question is how do we set up this configuration.

Do we have only one ip address on that nic and just use QoS as per the article?

How do we go on to configure the cluster if we have only one NIC and one IP address?

Thanks in advance,

Zarko

Hyper-V replica and SQL server

$

I’m going to use Hyper-V replica for disaster recovery of production environment. The system includes Navision on MS SQL 2008 R2 for around 35 users which I’m going to move to Virtual Machine (with separate SAS HDD volumes dedicated for SQL DB and Logs).

Just wander if anybody could help me find answer for following questions:

  1. I know, Hyper- v replica requires some space for logs, do they have to be on the same volume as drive or could they be on completely different volume?
  2. Can I use all space available on those hard drives for VHD file or do I need to leave some free space?
  3. What will be replication performance impact on SQL server?
  4. Do I have to use recovery point to make sure my SQL database is consistent? I read somewhere, recovery point has significant impact on server.
  5. Any other advice about configuration?

Thank you

Free space on physical disk with VHD drive – best practice.

Just wander if somebody could help me to find answer for question about free space on physical drive (in production environment) which I need to have.

Scenario is as follow:

  1. SQL Server on Hyper-V Windows 2012 Virtual Machine
  2. Fixed System VHD on 7.2 K SAS RAID 10 shared with other virtual servers physical Volume
  3. Fixed Database VHD on dedicated RAID 1 600 GB SAS 10K Volume
  4. Fixed Logs VHD on dedicated 300 GB RAID 1 SAS 10K Volume
  5. Hyper-V remote replication to DR site
  6. Altaro backup of Hyper Machines

Questions:

  1. Can I use whole available space on dedicated volumes for Database and Logs? (600GB and 300GB) or do I need leave some space free? If so, could you advise how much?
  2. Any advice about possible problems with following configuration?

Shared nothing Live Migration Fails at 65%

$

I have multiple identical Hyper-V hosts (not clustered) with Server 2012 Datacenter on them.  When attempting to migrate machines

from one to the other (Share-Nothing), The will go to 65% and then they will fail.  The error that I get is:

'HYPERV07'. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxx)

Virtual hard disks information transfer failed for virtual machine 'VM1': This

operation returned because the timeout period expired. (0x800705B4). (Virtual Machine ID

xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx).

Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

(0x800705B4).

The operation timed out.

Some migrations will succeed, and some will not.  It doesn't matter if I do it with the machines live or shut down.  The Hosts are on the same subnet, in the same domain.  I have the Kerberos delegation configured for the hosts.  Each host has a ten gig interface (active) and a 1 gig interface (standby) in a NIC Team.  I get the same error if I try to migrate them from the GUI or Powershell.  Any help would be appreiated.

Windows 2012 Virtual Machine Guest Clustering issue

Hi,

  • I implemented Windows server 2012 Cluster that contains 2 member servers (Windows 2012 Datacenter edition) and configure failover clustering and Hyper V.
  • I created 2 Hyper-V guest machines with Windows 2012 standard edition and add them to the hyper-V host cluster. Each Hyper-V guest on different Hyper-V host server.
  • I enabled virtual fiber channel on each hyper-V host and gave the same name for the virtual fiber channel on both of hyper V hosts. then I connected each Hyper-V Guest to the respective fiber channel adapter.
  • I connected both Hyper-V guest machines to the shared Storage LUNs
  • I created the failover cluster inside the guest machines and everything went fine without errors.
  • issue: when I share any folder in the hyper-V guest machines on a volume that is from the storage and then go to any child folder sharing properties; that properties stops responding for 5 minutes, then I see the child folder properties; sharing tab with an empty network path attribute. Attached is the properties of the child folder sharing tab.

Waiting your help to solve this issue

Inside VMware Hypervisor, Hyper-V 2012 cannot see second virtual hard disk

$

My desktop is installed with VMware ESXi 5.1.0 hypervisor

Under my VMware ESXi 5.1.0 hypervisor, I created 2 virtual machine for TWO Hyper-V 2012 (I add 2 virtual hard disk for each).

Both Hyper-V 2012 can be installed, and running smoothly.  During installation of Hyper-V, I format both virtual hard disk.

After installation, however I cannot see the second hard disk in Hyper-V 2012.

I can connect to them using Hyper-V Manager in my Windows 7 laptop.  (failed to connect to Hyper-V host using Server Manager, most probably I'm using RSAT in Win 7 laptop)

The first virtual hard disk is C:\ (which the Hyper-V 2012 is being installed)

But the second virtual hard disk cannot be found.  The reason why I want to have 2 virtual hard disk, is that first one is SSD, while second one is a normal hard disk which will be used for Hyper-V's VMs.

Anything can be done so that I can see the second virtual hard disk in my virtual Hyper-V host?

I'm using this nested hypervisor for learning purposes at home.

Need to install Hyper-V Management tools on Server 2012 VM

I need to install the Hyper-V Management tools onto a Server 2012 VM. However it won't let me install the management tools because it says hypervisor is already running. I've done this before from PowerShell but I can't remember the exact command that I used and it's driving me crazy. Anyone know how to install just the management tools on a 2012 VM?

Can I use different specs of server when adding a node to my windows clustered VM using hyperV?

I have an existing cluster of windows servers (virtualized) across two identical host servers using hyperV. Is it possible to add a node with a different specs server that will also use HyperV?

Using Differencing disks, SysPrep images are not activated.

Sysprepped imagaes (activated) when imported for a new VM stay activated. But incase the new VM is using a differencing disk which is a child of the activated SysPrepped disk on boot the image says its pending for activation.

Can this be fixed ?
