Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

0
0

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

Best method to deliver a VM for Hyper-V on Windows 8

0
0

Hi all,

With a new client (who is migrating to Windows 8 already! Who-hoo!) They want to deliver a fully configured Hyper-V Vm to their clients after or during deployment time.

What do you all think is the best way to do it?  I'm enabling Hyper-V through a MDT Task Sequence pane (basically we're using the UDI and I made a custom page with a checkbox for Hyper-V, if it is checked, it kicks off a separate step later in the TS to install Hyper-V).  I considered just taking the VM, adding it as a package and if the checkbox is selected, copy the VHD and all other files to the appropriate location on the workstation.

Would this work?  Do you have any other ideas?

So, to summarize, the goal is to automate delivering a fully configured VM to the user's desktop for them to interact with in Hyper-V.

   Thanks!

Booting from Home-made OS in Hyper-V

For a while I have been developing this simple, single file Operating System. To test it, I would put the .COM file on my flashdrive and rename it BOOTMGR. I would then plug it into a computer and it would boot successfully. However, I set up a Virtual Hardrive the same way. It is formated in FAT32 I used the command bootsect /nt60 R: /mbr (R being the drive of the mounted Virtual Hard drive) ut it does not boot in Hyper-V. I have it in IDE0 and I have the Virtual BIOS set to boot from IDE first. When I run it I get "Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device" What should I do? Thank you for reading, Jakeinc

CSV Issue expanding volume

Hi All

We have a 2 node cluster using CSV on an Equalogic SAN

I have been able to expand the volume on the SAN, and also Expanded the Volume using Diskpart on the owner of the disk resource. I can see the extra space from within disk manager.

But when I browse to the CSV, I only still only see the original size before it was expanded

This is also reported as the original size in VMM as well

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Software RAID in Windows 2012, storage planning without hardware RAID in LAB

0

I couldn´t find similar situation on these forums, so I have to open new thread.

I´m building new Hyper-V host based on Server 2012, and I´m thinking about storage configuration, should I use software RAID based on Windows Server´s disk management, or not? Currently I still have VMware ESXi and I have some I/O issues, because VMs are placed on single disks. This is a LAB with limited budged, and sence RAID card it self costs approx 300€ (when entire 8 core & 32gb ram will cost used 600€), I´m trying to avoid purchuasing hardware RAID solution.

I will have 4x1TB SATA III disks, so I could setup 2x mirrored disk spaces. Another option is, again to create VMs on it´s own single disks, planning what would be the workload.

So I will have single Hyper-V host, which will run all VMs based on W2012. By low performance I mean, that VM will not require high performance from hardware.
- 2xDC (low performance)
- SQL cluster (2xnodes)
- File Cluster (2xnodes, low performance)
- Configuration Manager (remote SQL)
- Operation Manager (remote SQL)
- RRAS, VPN, DA on single server

HyperV %Guest Run Time Counter in Milliseconds?

0
0

In the HyperV Hypervisor Virtual Processor Counters there is the %Guest Run Time Counter that gives me a percentage value. Is there any way to get a value in milliseconds? I think i could convert it with the knowledge of the time frame for the measurement. My calculation would be: TimeFrame * %GuestRunTime / 100.

Does anyone know how long the timeframe for the measurement is?

Network Configuration for virtualized Servers

Hi everybody

I am new to virtualization and I am trying to implement 4 virtual servers on a single physical server.

The physical server is

Xeon QuadCore-1.9Ghz/24GB/600GBx5( raid5)/1xNIC

I have made new virtual machines 4 each. I want one of them to be ADDS Server. Other three are application servers.

The NIC on the physical (host)server has only Hyper-V Extensible virtual switch protocol on it. There is one more virtual adaptor created on base machine. This has IP address of 192.168.0.233/255.255.255.0. Gateway is my internet router 192.168.0.1. DNS servers IP addreses as given by my ISP.

The first VM-1 would be a ADDS /DNS server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.234/255.255.255.0

The second VM-2 would be my accounting server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.235/255.255.255.0

The third VM-3 would be my Invoicing application server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.236/255.255.255.0

The fourth VM-4 would be my Terminal Services Licensing Server. I will be connecting about 40 Thin Clients on this server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.237/255.255.255.0

The problem is :

1. I do not get access to internet through any of the VMs. I have tried putting router IP address as gateway address and IP address of my ADDS server also. Also none of my Thin Clients are able to connect to Terminal Services Server.

But I am able to ping the internet router from any of the VMs. PLs suggest proper Gateway and DNS server addresses. Would it be advisable to have separate NICs for each of the servers? There wont be more than 15 users active at a time and hence I have put only one NIC in the server.

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

hyper v wizard hangs

Hi,

every wizard in hyper v manager that I run hangs, but it completes the action I guess it those not sent the confirmation that it is done, this happens with all the servers, if I try to create a VHD from a windows 7 machine it creates it and give's me an error that it already exists,  I think this started happening after I installed the CA,

all of the pc's/servers/users are auto enrolled with certificates

Solarwinds Installation on DC

Hi,

We were planning to install Solarwinds on Windows 2008 R2 Std - 64bit domain controller (physical server) however solarwinds strongly recommends not to install this software (Solarwinds NPM for networking device monitoring) on a DC hence thought of configuring Hyper-V on a DC and install 2008 R2 Std edition as a virtual machine and then install Solarwinds software. Is this recommended? or will there be any security flaws? Kindly let me know.

Server Core 2012 - Server Manager Works, but Hyper-V Manager does NOT Connect

I have been working on this for several days...read every article out there (I think)
SetUp:  Windows 8 machine connecting to a Server Core 2012 install (WORKGROUP - not Domain)
Need to be able to manage the Server Core 2012 in a remote location over the internet
I am able to connect to the Server Core 2012 install via Server Manager, but Hyper-V Manager will not connect.

I have the Hyper-V Tools on and I have tried turning both client and server firewalls off.
Is it possible to run Hyper-V Manager and manage the Server Core 2012 in a remote location over the internet?

Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V Server - VSS Writer & Backups

0

Here is the scenario:

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V Server and we have a problem with the VSS writer on the server.  The problem is seen when attempting to perform backups on the machine (we have used Symantec Backup-Exec as well as Acronis).  When a backup starts on the host, the job just freezes and no information is reported on the server doing the backups except that it times out.  On the Hyper-V host, when doing a "VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" command, everything comes back as: State: [1] Stable, Last error: No error, when no backup has been attempted however when you have attempted a backup, it just freezes and doesn't report back anything at all.  In order to fix the freezing a reboot of the host is required.  Additionally, on the reboots I've noticed a stream of "Hyper-V-Integration-Data-Exchange" errors (Event 4096), Hyper-V-Integration-Data-Exchange) - The Data Exchange integration services is either not enabled, not running or not initialized."  (This is only seen during a reboot.)

Thanks!

Guide to remote manage Hyper-V servers and VM's in workgroups or standalone

0
0

This guide is based on the following 3 products:
Windows server 2012 (core)
Windows 8
Hyper-V server v3 / Hyper-V server 2012

The following guide will enable you to:

1: remotely manage your Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Hyper-V manager
2: remotely manage your Hyper-V servers' firewall with a MMC snap-in.
3: remotely manage your Hyper-V server (2012) with server manager

! This should also work for Core installations of server 2012, but I haven't tried.

This guide is purely focussed on servers in a WORKGROUP, or as a stand alone.
I CAN NOT tell you what you need to do to get it working in a domain.

* You can run these commands straight from the console (Physically at the machine) or through RDP.
* You will need to be logged on as an administrator.
* Commands are listed in somewhat random order; I do however advise to follow the steps as listed.
* Commands with ? in front of them are only ment to be helpfull for troubleshooting,
* and to identify settings and changes made.
* Commands and instructions with ! in front of them are mandatory.

- server: means the server core or hyper-v server (non gui)
- client: means the machine you want to use for remote administration.
- Some commands are spread over 2 lines; be sure to copy the full syntax.

> To enable the Hyper-V manager to connect to your server, you need to perform the following 2 actions: (Assuming you have already installed the feature)

1:
! Client: Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file.
! right-click --> properties --> security
! click --> edit --> add --> YOURUSERNAME or Administrator --> OK
! then select this new user, and tick the "modify"-box under the "allow"-section.
! apply the change, and close.
! doubleclick the file, and open with notepad
! add the ip-address and name of your server (no // or other crap needed)
! Save the file
# I recommend putting a shortcut to this file on the desktop.
# If you change the ip-address of your server (e.g. move the server from staging to a live environment)
# you might forget to do so in the hosts file.
# Hyper-V manager, MMC, RSAT, and Server-manager all rely on the hosts-file to resolve the name.
# some of these might connect to their respective service on an i.p.-level, but some don't.
# This is the main reason you need to modify this file.

! USE AN ELEVATED CMD/POWERSHELL PROMPT TO CONTINUE !
# the next config needs to be done on windows 8.
# It seems that it's already preconfigured under server 2012

2:
! Client: dcomcnfg
! open component services --> computers
! right-click -> my computer -> properties
! select "COM SECURITY" tab
! under "ACCESS PERMISSIONS" select "edit limits"
! select "ANONYMOUS LOGON", and tick "remote access" under ALLOW
# Without this adjustment, you can't connect to your Hyper-V server
# with the Hyper-V manager if you're not in a domain.

> And if you haven't done so already... make sure you have enabled remote management number 4 on the Hyper-V server console.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

> Next, is to get the MMC firewall snap-in working.
The reason for this, is to have a GUI available to configure it.
If you're happy without it, you may skip this and use a shell instead to do so.

? server: netsh advfirewall show currentprofile
# shows the current profile (public/domain/private) and its settings
# depending on your needs, you should set the right profile to fit your needs.
# You can easily do this when the MMC snap-in is done. (after you've followed these steps)

! server: netsh advfirewall set currentprofile settings remotemanagement enable
# enables remote management of the firewall on an application level
# (In other words: allows the firewall to be remotely managed)

! server: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Firewall Remote Management" new enable=yes
# allows remote management of the firewall, through the required firewall ports with TCP protocol.
# 4 rules will be updated to allow access: public & Domain, dynamic and endpoint-mapper.
# You can disable/add/change the rule from the MMC snap-in after finishing this guide.
# e.g. set the firewall through the MMC-GUI to only allow specific ip-addresses etc.

? server: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule all
# Shows a list of available rules, and their current state.
# when run from cmd, the list exceeds the maximum length for review.
# (from cmd, type:) start powershell, and run the command from there.

! Client: cmdkey /add:YOURSERVERNAME /user:USERNAMEONTHESERVER /pass:THEPASSWORDOFTHATUSER
# I recommend you to use a username with enough privileges for management
# All capital letters need to be replaced with your input
# CMD answers "credential added successfully" when you're done

! Client: locate MMC, and run it as an admin.
# In windows 8/2012, go to search and type MMC. Right-click the icon,
# and choose run as admin on the bar below.

! Client: application MMC: select "file" --> Add/remove snap-in
! --> (left pane) scroll down to "windows firewall" --> select and click "add"
! select "another computer"
! type the name of the server you want to manage (NO workgroup/ or //, just same name as you typed for cmdkey)

* Part 2 is done.
# Have a look by doubleclicking the firewall icon in the left pane.
# It looks and works the same as the GUI version that you are familiar with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! Next is the Server Manager.
# Follow the steps listed to get your server listed and manageable in the server manager.

! Client: Open the created Firewall snap-in for your server.
! Find the 3 "Remote Event Log Management" entries in the list of INBOUND rules, and enable them.

! Open powershell --> in cmd windows, type: start powershell
! run the following line in powershell
! Client: in C:\Windows\system32> set-item WSMAN:\localhost\client\trustedhosts -value YOURSERVERNAME -concatenate

# WinRM Security Configuration.
# This command modifies the TrustedHosts list for the WinRM client. The computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be
# authenticated. The client might send credential information to these computers. Are you sure that you want to modify
# this list?
# [Y] Yes  [N] No  [S] Suspend  [?] Help (default is "Y"): y
#
# I recommend to choose yes; unless you like to pull some more hairs...

! server: winrm qc
# WinRM service is already running on this machine.
# WinRM is not set up to allow remote access to this machine for management.
# The following changes must be made:
# Configure LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to grant administrative rights remotely
# to local users.
# Make the changes? y / n
!  select yes

! Client: open the server 2012 server manager
! click manage -> add server
! select the DNS tab, and type the name of your server

Done.

You can now manage your remote server through the familiar computer management GUI.

! Right-click your remote server, and select "Computer Management"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few side notes:

? The Performance tab seems to list the local machine's performance, in stead of the remote servers'
? If you want Windows server backup, you need to right-click the server in the server manager, and select "add roles and features.
? it will then become available under the "computer management" of the remote server.

If you liked this guide you may thank my employer, Mr. Chris W.
for giving me the time to work it all out.

Cheers!

Cluster Network

Hi,

We were running 2x3 node Hyper-V 2012 cluster and added a 4th node to both clusters. Most VM workloads have been running as expected on the 4th node of either cluster and at one point I saw 120 VM’s running on one of them node with no reported issues. Now it gets a little strange because we have a couple of VM’s that run in a failover cluster and if any one of the cluster nodes runs on Hyper-V node 4 its reported as down in cluster manager.

We have been running 2x3 node Hyper-V 2012 clusters since the release of SCVMM SP1 now with no issues. We are using Logical switches and all switches have 2 network adaptors assigned.

The process used for adding both node 4’s  was;

Our hardware is Cisco UCS using B230 M2 blades All hardware was purchased at the same time and all 4 blades in each cluster are running from the same service profile template therefore there should be no discrepancies in the hardware presented to windows from one blade to the next.

Thanks in advance for any help

Packets sent out the wrong Interface on Hyper-V 2012 Failover Cluster

0
0
Here is some background information:
2 Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V in a Failover Cluster environment.  Each has:
1 NIC for Live Migration 192.168.80.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for Cluster Communication 192.168.90.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for iscsi 192.168.100.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for host management with a routable public IP (*connected to corp network) w/ gateway on this interface
1 NIC for Virtual Machine traffic (*connected to corp network)
All NICs are up, we can ping the IPs between servers on the private network and on the public facing networks.  All functions of hyper-v are working and the failover cluster reports all interfaces are up and we receive no errors.  Live migration works fine.  In the live migration settings i have restricted the use of the 2 NICs (live migration or cluster comm).

My problem is that our networking/security group sees on occasion (about every 10 minutes with a few other packets thrown in at different times) syn packets that are destined for the 192.168.80.3 interface goes out of the public interface and is dropped at our border router.  These should be heading out of the 192.168.80.x or 192.168.90.x interfaces without ever hitting our corporate network. Anyone have an idea of why this might be happening?  Traffic is on TCP 445.

Appreciate the help.

Set Exact memory to Guest

0

Hi All,

This is my first question of the forum so please be nice if I do mistakes ;)

I would like to know about setting "Exact Target" memory to guest on HyperV2012 platform.

I have guest enabled with Dynamic Memory [ 512MB to 32GB ] & would like to set a target memory [ 4GB or 8GB ] on runtime depending on its current memory usage. Is there a way to achieve it ?

The balloon buffer % is not solving my purpose as I want a complete control over memory allocation to guest programatically.

Thanks,

Rishi

Dynamic Memory : Task Manager reporting wrong "Total" memory after scale down

0
0

Hello All,

In HyperV2012 as Host and Windows 2008R2 as guest, If I use dynamic memory then below happens.

1. 2008 Guest scales up RAM nicely & task manager reflects correct allocation.

2. Same guest, after scaling down the RAM does not reflect correct allocation in Task manager. The extra memory is shown as Hardware Locked.

Is this a known BUG ? Because the users are frustrating and complaining about wrong Memory Allocation report in Task Manager of their Guest.

Please help me understand this Task Manager issue & possible solution to show correct RAM allocation in Guest.

Thanks.

Hyper-V on Windows server 2012 Guest Failover Clustering

Hey,

I have 2 Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition servers running Hyper-V on them. On each host I have a server that I am trying to setup guest clustering for a fileserver and they both are sharing the drive via iSCSI. But when I try to create the cluster it fails on the forming cluster step. However when I have the nodes on the same Hyper-V host I am able to successfully create the cluster. When I had it working on one host I migrated the VM to the second host and the cluster service on that server failed. Any ideas on what it could be?
