Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Hyper-V Server, Hyper-V role, Server Core???

Looks like there are a number of choices for using Hyper-V.

According to one survey, most people use the GUI:

http://greatbighypervsurvey.com/

Aidan Finn seems to recommend the GUI:

http://www.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39466

It probably does facilitate troubleshooting - unless you are very handy at the command line.

Does anyone else have opinions on this?

I suppose that, if you want to virtualize 2-3 servers that may not be very demanding (trying to determine that now), and if you have a host server with 32 GB... does it really matter if the host uses 2-3 GB?

Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

Cannot connect to hyper-v 2008 R2; it says "Make sure your RPC service is running"

Hi, I have a computer with Server 2008 R2 that I use to manage the rest of my servers.
I am trying to add one of our hyper-v server (2008 R2) via hyper-v manager but I am getting an error saying "Cannot connect to the RPC service on computer '10.x.x.x'. Make sure your RPC service is running."

Whereas I have no problem adding other hyper-v servers in my network.
That hyper-v server has firewall been disabled and adding locally to its hyper-v manager works fine. I have added my management server name and the account I use to logon to my management server (domain administrato) to its local Administrators group but still no luck. I can successfully RDP to that hyper-v server and I can confirm that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running on that hyper-v server.

Your help will be much appreciated, thank you.

Hyper-V Dynamic memory, Driver Locked

Hello All,

I've been wondering about the following.

I have 2 Dell R910 (Windows Server 2008R2 SP1) machines as my Hyper-V host machines, with around 40-50 VMs running on it. For most of my servers I've enabled dynamic memory, but on some of these machines I've seen the following:

For some reason this machine running Remote Desktop Services (with Web Access) is using around 3.8GB of memory.

Processes list only a fraction of the actual Memory being used.

But RAMmap shows that 2.5GB is being used by Kernel Drivers. From what I've read this might be the balooning effect of the dynamic memory. However, the RAM usage was the same yesterday evening (12h before I took these screenshots), when no one was actually working on this server.

I've seen this happen on multiple of my guest machines, the machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Edition.

Can anyone explain to me why it is doing this?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Tom

Hello everyone,

Here is the situation. I've deleted some snapshots from the directory. The problem now is that the still exist in hyper-v manager. How can I delete them there?

When I try to delete I get the following error: Cannot remove snapshot: the specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037)

Can someone please help me? Thanks in advance!

Host runnning EQL ASM switch in pause automatically

Hello Everybody,

I am using 2 Hyper-V Failover clusters (Win2008R2) with 2 groups of Equallogic (DRP). I replicate through ASM and Equallogic. Since yesterday afternoon the hosts in the primary cluster are switching randomly in pause mode (all nodes in the cluster). The solution to avoid that is to disable service "Equallogic Auto-Snapshot Manager" (meaning no snapshot and no replication).

For all VMs I use a CSV per VM but for several others VMs I use a common CSV. Everything was running well last week. I have to precise also that I take several snapshots per day of these volumes.

Anyone has an idea why my hosts switch in pause mode?

PS : I was careful in the setup of my schedule and I have no error in the logs.

Michael

Hyper-V Server - VSS Writer & Backups

Here is the scenario:

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V Server and we have a problem with the VSS writer on the server.  The problem is seen when attempting to perform backups on the machine (we have used Symantec Backup-Exec as well as Acronis).  When a backup starts on the host, the job just freezes and no information is reported on the server doing the backups except that it times out.  On the Hyper-V host, when doing a "VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" command, everything comes back as: State: [1] Stable, Last error: No error, when no backup has been attempted however when you have attempted a backup, it just freezes and doesn't report back anything at all.  In order to fix the freezing a reboot of the host is required.  Additionally, on the reboots I've noticed a stream of "Hyper-V-Integration-Data-Exchange" errors (Event 4096), Hyper-V-Integration-Data-Exchange) - The Data Exchange integration services is either not enabled, not running or not initialized."  (This is only seen during a reboot.)

Thanks!

Connect Hyper-v to Internet via a corp-net

Hi all,

I am planning to connect my VM to Internet via a corp domain. In other words, connect to the domain and them through that to Internet.

I have two problems, I cannot join the domain. I receive this:

An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain "" could be contacted. ...

I also cannot to directly access to internet even though I have a virtual network adapter on my VM. Could anyone help me with this?

Thanks,

Rostam

Hyper-V Manager on a Domain Controller (v3 2012)

Is it possible to add the Hyper-V manager to a domain controller (Windows 2012)?

I know you can't install the role and actually host virtual machines .. I don't want to do that. I want to be able to manage Hyper-V servers from a domain controller (using the Hyper-V Manager).

I know I can also install 3rd-party management tools (on Hyper-V or another machine) ... want to see if I can use native stuff first.

Stop-VM Does Not Gracefully Shut Down Virtual Machine

$

Hi.  I'm running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012.  I have a guest VM that I can shut down gracefully via the Hyper-V Manager (right-click on VM and select "Shut Down").

I can also shut this VM down gracefully via PowerShell using the older WMI method that is documented here:
     http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/30/shutting-down-a-hyper-v-virtual-machine.aspx

However, when I shut it down via PowerShell using the nifty, new Stop-VM command, I get the following error:
 - Confirm
 - Hyper-V cannot shut down virtual machine ChiefCollig because the Shutdown integration service is unavailable. To avoid potential data loss, you can pause or save the state of the virtual machine. The other option is to turn off the virtual machine, but data loss might occur.

If I select "Y", the VM is crashed as if I turned off the virtual power switch.

If  I query the integration services of the VM using the Get-VMIntegrationService command, here's the result.
VMName      Name                               Enabled PrimaryStatusDescription SecondaryStatusDescription
------            ----                                   -------     ------------------------           --------------------------
ChiefCollig   Time Synchronization       True      OK
ChiefCollig   Heartbeat                        True      OK
ChiefCollig   Key-Value Pair Exchange True      OK                                     The protocol version of the component installed...
ChiefCollig   Shutdown                        True      OK
ChiefCollig   VSS                                  True      No Contact

"Hey, Van.  It appears that the Hyper-V integration services have been installed on the VM, but why isn't the VSS component in contact with the host?"

OK, full disclosure time!  I suspect that the VSS component is out of contact because the guest OS is some flavor of Linux, although I'm not sure which flavor.  The VM is actually a Sophos UTM virtual appliance that I installed from scratch into the Guest.  The installation process sensed that it was a Hyper-V environment and it installed appropriate drivers.  It also appears that Hyper-V Integration Services was installed as part of this process.

All of this said, the integration services shutdown component is in contact with the host.  Isn't this enough for a graceful shutdown?

"Hey, Van.  How do you know that Stop-VM crashes the VM while the Hyper-V Manager and the WMI methods gracefully shut it down?"

That's a great question.  I monitor the console the VM to make the determination.

When I use Stop-VM, the VM is powered off within a couple of seconds.  And when I turn it back on, it complains about recovering from a unscheduled shutdown.

When I use Hyper-V Manager or WMI via PowerShell, the VM takes a minute or so to shutdown, and the console shows all of the various services and components being stopped during the shutdown process.

So in summary, 2012 Hyper-V is able to shutdown the VM gracefully from the Hyper-V Manager Console and also from PowerShell via the WMI method.  Hyper is NOT able to shut the VM down gracefully via the new PowerShell Stop-VM command.

Does anyone have any theories or suggestions?

See Ya!

Confused on how configure Hyper-V with 2 nics for a disjointed network communication.

$

OK, here goes. I have a client who had a Windows 2003 server that crashed due to major hardware issues. It is a Doctors office with patient records dating back 15 years. We tried to remove the databases and move them to another server and kept running into corruption errors. We worked with the manufacturer of the software but got nowhere as the application was sold to IBM in '07 and there is no support options left. We made a VHD of the OS and put it on a Windows 2008R2 w/Hyper-V server. We demoted the OS and joined it to the new 2008 servers domain. Everything was working fine for the initial tests for access to the data. The next step was to get connectivity from the workstations to the VM OS for the application, again all worked well. The sticking point right now is that I have the VM (W2K3) configured so that everyone has access to the "old server" for the legacy software, but cannot figure out how to configure access for the 2nd nic which connects directly to the Xray machine. The hierarchy I have in mind is this:

Nic one is an  Intel 82574L. It is configured with a 192.168.21.20 IP

Nic2 is a Intel 82579LM with an IP of 10.0.0.1 (the vm nic has 10.0.0.2)

This is the way the old server was connected. The first network card for the internal network and the second nic configured for 10.0.0.1 connected to the Xray machine.

This is my f1rst attempt into the virtual arena and I am getting confused as to the proper way to configure this. After playing around with the network connections naming I have attempted to name the connections for their purpose.

In the Virtual Network Manager I have 3 listings:

1: Scanner Network Connection. It is set up as external on the 82579LM card (Nic2) Allow management checked.

2: W2K3VM Connection is on the 82574L (Nic1) also as external with All management checked

3: Local area connection set for internal only. I am assuming that it was there upon installing the Hyper-V.

Within the VM I can click on the lan connection which I named "domain name" connection it shows the proper IP address 192.168.21.21.

When I try and enable the 2nd virtual nic it has an IP of 10.0.0.2 along with the proper subnet for connection to the Xray machine. The only problem is it does not connect and the connection with the workstations on the lan is interrupted.

Upon trying to connect the second nic on the host server It says there is connectivity. With the vm it shows it is also connected but the cannot access the xray machine and the workstations have no access. It is hopefully something simple that I just do not see. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It now seems that the AD DNS which worked fine before enabling the second nic had malfunctioned. The host OS DNS gives an error now that says: The server scan could not be contacted ther error was: A security package specific error occurred.

They are using Symantec End Point Protection 12.1.2 and I have set up (as a test) rule to allow all traffic both ways for IP and UDP traffic.

I have looked at so many posts I am lost for a solution.

Sorry for the convoluted post. Thanks for the help!

Using iscsi initiator within a VM vs a passthrough disk, vs vhdx

$

With the advent of H-V verison 3 (2012) I think this quesion needs to be revisited.  I was told long ago (about a year and a half :) ), that it was frowned upon to use an iSCSI connection from within a child VM.  If the data was large (more than 2TB), then using a pass-though disk was perferred. You lost HA, live migraton, etc, but oh well. Now, things have definitely changed, but the matrix of determining the right answer is too much for me.  So I ask the gods of all Microsoft Knowledge, what is the current state of this question?  Can I (should I) use an iSCSI initiator in a VM to attach to iSCSI SAN storage?  Should I just convert the disk to a vhdx and gain all things good and holy that the MS gods want me to realize with a virtual environment?  Should I stick with pass-through because it still offers APPRECIABLY better performance (in my instance, I'm talking about file server storage, but we can assume for everyone's benefit that we might be talking about more robust performance needs)?  What say you?

Thanks,

How to make a Hyper-V 2012 cluster perform

$

Hello,

I am in the final stages of selecting components for Hyper-V 2012 cluster and SAN, I am interested in people's opinions on what the best tweaks for improved performance.

SAN will be 8G FC (eg 3PAR 7400 / Compellent SC8000 / NetApp VNX 5500) with 30-40 Tier-1 disks, 20-30 Tier-2 disks, possible some SSD.

Servers will be 2 CPU (eg E5-2680), 256GB Memory (16x16 1600Mhz), 3 x 146 15K in RAID-1 + spare, 2 x single port 8Gb HBA, 4 x 10GB NIC, 4 x 1GB NIC

Introducing 10Gb switching for east-west traffic that will most likely be connected to 6509-E core using multiple 1Gbps.

Where would you spend money if you wanted to increase performance ?

SSD for the SAN ?

10Gbps from rack switching to 6509 core ?

Upgrade CPU to E5-2690 ?

Fusion IO ?

One vendor suggested having SSD for the Hyper-V OS drives.

I do realise I have provided little details on the workload, assume typical small business, 1000 users, 60 guests, file, print, exchange, sql, sharepoint. Backup is on seperate hardware using DAS.

Thanks

Any way to force 'destroy' operation to complete after deleting VM

$

Hello,

I'm trying to delete a VM from my hyper-v server which it turns out had a number of snapshots which had been deleted but not merged properly.  There are nine .avhd files - seven of which belong to deleted snapshots.

The VM has just been sitting with a status of 'Destroying...' for ages in the Hyper-v management console.  From Googling the issue this appears to be because Hyper-V is trying to merge all the .avhd files into the .vhd file before it deletes the VM.

I don't care whether this happens or not as I don't want or need the .vhd file - I just want to delete the VM.  Is there anyway that I can force Hyper-V to just delete the VM or do I just have to wait for the 'Destroying...' process to complete in its own time?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Ros

Hyper-V 2012 Free Instability...

$

Hi, I have a brand new Lenovo RD430 Rackmount server that I setup a with Hyper-V 2012.  I joined the Hyper-V to my Domain (SBS 2011 domain).  It seems that it's not as easy as VMware to manage a Hyper-V Server that is not inside a domain... I didn't want to join the Server to my AD, but didn't really had the choice.  I also installed drivers from Lenovo for Windows 2012 from the command-line.

My server is running since a 2 or 3 weeks.  During that time, I had couple of times (3 or 4 if I remember correctly) that the Hyper-V didn't respond to Manage Compter from a VM Win2012 (couldn't manage it) or even at the console, did not respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL at all.  Finally, other issue I had is that I can RDP, but the 2nd CMD that is running never completed and I couldn't launch anything from the TXT based menu.

Is this supposed to be Stable enough for production environnement ?
