Widescreen resolution on a Surface Pro?

$

We need to run a VM on a Surface Pro, and we got everything working (quite well, actually) to where we want it, but there's one small hitch: The screen resolution of vmconnect appears to ONLY be various 4:3 resolutions. Is there a way to get vmconnect to provide a widescreen resolution that would better fit the resolution of the Surface pro whose resolution is 1920x1080?

We can use RDP to get a proper fullscreen (widescreen) display, but we would like to not have to use RDP since the VM will only be running infrequently.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

Hyper-V 2012 Free Instability...

Hi, I have a brand new Lenovo RD430 Rackmount server that I setup a with Hyper-V 2012.  I joined the Hyper-V to my Domain (SBS 2011 domain).  It seems that it's not as easy as VMware to manage a Hyper-V Server that is not inside a domain... I didn't want to join the Server to my AD, but didn't really had the choice.  I also installed drivers from Lenovo for Windows 2012 from the command-line.

My server is running since a 2 or 3 weeks.  During that time, I had couple of times (3 or 4 if I remember correctly) that the Hyper-V didn't respond to Manage Compter from a VM Win2012 (couldn't manage it) or even at the console, did not respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL at all.  Finally, other issue I had is that I can RDP, but the 2nd CMD that is running never completed and I couldn't launch anything from the TXT based menu.

Is this supposed to be Stable enough for production environnement ?

iSCSI in converged network scenario

If we have a converged network with two teamed pNICs in LBFO on windows server 2012 Hyper-V node, Teamed adapter is assigned in vSwitch used for tenant, management, live migration, cluster and two iSCSI networks do we need MPIO?

LBFO in Hyper-V mode assigns iSCSI vNIC stream to a single physical adapter and its bandwidth only. If we have two iSCSI vNICs attached to the vSwitch how can be sure that the iSCSI vNICs is assigned to a different pNICs and to leverage of MPIO? What if we are using Hash mode of LBFO where the IP and port is the same and MAC is only different?

Thank You

Hard path limit of 8 in VM with Hyper-v virtual fibre channel?

Hello,

I am seeing a strange situation where I cannot exceed 8 paths in a vfc guest and wanted to see if anyone else has seen this.

I have server 2012 parent with Hyper-v and connecting to a storage controllers which have 16 target ports. 8 nodes, 2 ports each.

I have a brocade dual fabric and connect a single initiator to 8 targets in a zone on each fabric.

After enabling the zones I see on the parent 16 virtual ports in my qlogic qconvergedconsole on the Parent server. 8 on each HBA port. I go to my guest and I do not see a lun. I reboot the guest and check for a lun nothing.

After rebooting the server 2012, I check the vm and a lun is seen with 8 only paths. I check the parent and now I only see 4 virtual target ports per HBA.

I tried the same scenario with 4 node controllers and 4 target ports. Same behavior. 16 targets show up in HBA, after reboot of parent server only 8 ports.

Does Hyper-v have a hidden limit of only 8 paths and reduce the number of exposed virtual ports in the parent server?

Has anyone tried more than 8 paths and it work?

Thanks in advance.

Deleted snapshot- any options for recovery?

I have deleted a .avhdx file stupidly due to disk space issues, and lack of knowledge of VM's. Obviously when I try to start to start the virtual machine, it wont start because the file is missing.

Are their any options here to recover or am I royally screwed?

Does anyone come across Hardware Sizing for Microsoft VDI Infrastructure on windows 2012 Server.

We are looking at 250 Virtual Desktop with combination of Pooled and Personal Virtual Desktop
And 750 as Application Virtualization. Which will also include System Center.

If anyone have come across Hardware Sizing calculator or if anyone knows how to size the hardware.

Awaiting for response.

hyper-v deduplication

Hello, How can I deduplicate a filesystem that has several vhdx files on it? (THAT ARE NOT RUNNING IN HYPER-V --- but simply backed up onto another partition.)

Specifically I want to use replication + deduplication, but if I can't, I am fine with just manually backing up the VHDX files and then using deduplication so I can fit more in my storage pool.

Please don't tell me I can't "by design" because if I want to lose "performance" that should be my choice, not the programmers at Microsoft.

Virtual SpinRite machine(s)

I am trying to set up a computer to handle multiple VM's, each running SpinRite on a single drive attached to the mother board.

I have that part all working, in the sense that SpinRite starts up and detects the physical disk I've passed through to it from Server 2008 R2. The issue is that SpinRite believes the VM is reporting the disks size incorrectly so it won't run. Do VM's do things to the reporting of passed through disks that could account for this?

VM will not configure. Using Disk2VHD VHD for VM

Hello -

I'm testing a Win 2008 non-domain, stand-alone server vm conversion using DISK2VHD. I want to store the images and VHDs on a NTFS storage array share using UNC paths. Hyper-V (Win 2008 R2) host was assigned permissions as a computer to the shares - full control. VHD is created but I get the following error in Hyper-V Mgr when trying to create the VM using the DISK2VHD VHD. Ideas on what I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

Windows 8 Hyper-V and Network Connectivity

I am testing Windows 2012 Essentials as a VM on Windows 8 Hyper-V.  The Windows 8 operating system is running as a VHD on a Windows 7 installation. The Windows 2012 Essentials OS is running off of the Windows 8 VHD as a VHDX.  First of all is there anything inherently wrong in running Hyper-V this way?  Secondly I can't make a network connection when attaching the VM via a cable connection to the router.  I have the virtual switch configured as an external network but still can't get the VM to connect.  Any help would be appreciated.

Multi-Homed Virtual Server

My Hyper-V subnet is spanned across a 10mb point to point and the gateway is located on the far side.  I am backing it up with DPM that has an iSCSI SAN attached for storage but on a local LAN on the near side of the point to point.  The traffic is going back and forth across the WAN and all the backups are failing.  Is there anyway to attach a second NIC card to each of the virtual servers so that the traffic can stay local to the DPM? Is this the right approach to solving this?

hyper v 2012 VM Cannot connect to external network.

Hi

We have recently done a P2V conversion of an existing Window 2008 server and have it running on Hyper V on a Windows 2012 server.   However the Guest VM will only connect to the external network through the Legacy Adapter.  I have added the Integrated Services disk to update the VM - but when we add a Network Adapter the device Manager on the guest show an HP n373i Gigabit adapter (virtual) all working but there is no communication to the network.

The legacy driver is an Intel 21140 working at 100MB but is to slow for the network - any help gratefully received.

Thanks in Advance

Hyper-V Replica via certificates

$

Hello,

For a schoolproject I must setup the following:

Windows Server 1 <---> WAN <---> Windows Server 2

Windows Server 1 is the Headquarter of the fictional company, while Windows Server 2 is hosted at an external company.

I must test Hyper-V Replication via SSL but I can't get it to work. I followed like ten different tutorials but I keep getting stuck when I want to enable SSL on the second server. I gives the error: No valid Certificate found.

This is what I tried:

- Installing a certificate via CA on my primary server (worked, this machine has a cert)

- Installing a certificate via CA on my secondary server (did not work since it is not in a domain)

- Installing a certificate via Makecert on the first server works.

- Installing a certificate via Makecert on the second server: There is no matching certificate in the issuer's root certstore. Failed

Other information:

Windows Server 1:

Is within a domain
Is a DNS Server
Root CA
IP: 192.168.5.1
DNS: 192.168.5.1
Gateway: 192.168.5.100

Windows Server 2

Is not in a domain
IP: 192.168.6.1
DNS: 192.168.5.1
Gateway: 192.168.6.100

WAN  (WANem)

Is not in a domain
IP eth0: 192.168.5.100
Gateway: 192.168.5.100
IP eth1: 192.168.6.100
Gateway: 192.168.6.100

Sidenote; all machines are running in a seperate Virtual Machine.

WAN is simulated via WANem, a linux distro which simulates a WAN area.

Firewalls are turned off for testing.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction!

Thanks in advance!

Problem with DHCP on VM

Host is 2008 R2 SP1 w/ only Hyper-V, configured with one ethernet card 192.0.0.100

VM1 is 2008 R2 SP1 w/ AD/DC DNS WINS DCHP 192.0.0.101, and serves up a DHCP scope 192.0.0.200-.254 .

Vm2 is a XP SP3, with dinamic IP, the DHCP runs fine.

But with the all the machines out the HYPERV, with dynamic IP, the DCHP don´t works fine,  but with static IP the other services (DNS, WINS) work fine.

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V guest OS license?

Hello,

I’m about to install a new Hyper-V environment.

If I have 3 psychical hosts, I will buy3 WS 2012 std. Which will give me:

  • 6 Virtualizations rights
  • 6 WS 2012 OS (free) licenses

Now, I would like some more VM's in this environment, so... if I buy1 WS 2012 std. license, it will give me 2 Virtualizations rights! But can I also install the WS 2012 OS for (free) on those 2? or at least 1 of them??

Thanks :)
