HyperV reviewed solutions

Hi,

I am looking for reviewed solutions/configurations similar to Exchange 2010 Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP) but for HyperV 3.0

Are there any resources?

How to measure load on the host if running resource-intensive VMs?

$

Dear all,

I am facing a strange thing: one of my VMs report constantly 80-100% CPU usage in Task Manager inside the VM. The VM is definitely supposed to be under high load, so it is expected to be @80-90% CPU. Additionally, Hyper-V manager reports also a CPU utilization number quite high (definitely higher than 1-2%), however the host Task Manager reports only 1-2% CPU utilization in the same time. Both the host and quests are Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, host is Quad-core Intel Xeon, VM has 2 assigned VCPUs.

My question: how does the CPU utilization in host machine is reported if a guest is using high CPU? Is that even possible to measure the VM resource usage (disk load, CPU load) directly in the host, using generic tools instead of the Hyper-V console? I would expect the Virtual Machine Worker Process responsible for that particular VM would show high CPU in the host task manager.

Is there any whitepaper I should read that focuses directly on this topic?

Administrative Management & Commands for Server 2012

Given I have installed a Win2012 ServerCore, I discovered that 2008 R2 Admins will not see it, nor will SC VMM 2012, so drop a VM win 2012 under it (or a 2008 R2 Host) with the Windows interface and yes there it is and I can mange it - BUT. How do I get the Hyper-V and other managemnet tools interaface loaded to manage it when I dont have the Hyper-V role installed on the VM, nor would I as it is a VM not a host. Also SP1 for SC sorts the 2012 server 2012 managemnet but SC SP1 is still Beta - shame. Guess it takes a little time to get all the ducks in a row.

I have always understood servercore is 20% better performing than a Windows GUI bloated VM host so I assume the same is true in 2012. Whilst I am a fan of a CLI the GUI is just easy to navigate and spinning a VM with the GUI tools under it is essential as far as I am concerned, now I just need all the Admin tool sloaded in a Management VM under 2012 - any pack with this all in in I can drop in to manage the network from Win2012?.

The proper way to assign storage to a Hyper-V cluster

$

Let me preface this question with my background.  I'm coming from a VMware environment where I assigned/presented large volumes to each hypervisor and I put all of the VM's(VMDKS) in those big LUNS/Volumes and this was done via fibre channel...  Here we are using ISCSI and I have limited experience with this technology (but learning). They have in the past here created a new volumes for every single VM and Volume and presented all of those to the Hyper-V servers.

I've heard great things about Hyper-V, excited to learned, and want to get this new environment running much better than it is now.  The problem is I'm seeing a lot of errors on our Hyper-V boxes and we've had them bluescreen a couple times. In the systems logs I see a lot of the following:

Error Event ID 55 Source Ntfs - The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utilitiliy on volume _

Warning: Event ID 57 Source Ntfs - The system failed to flush data to the transaction lo.g corruption may occur,

Information Event ID 2 Scource:MPIO - Added device to \Device\MPIODISK#. DumpData contains the current number of paths

My assumption is that with all of these volumes there is alot more ISCIS chatter on that network that is causing volumes to drop....  Where do I begin?

Thanks you for any assistance in advance

Latency issues on newly created virtuals

I have 3 virtuals running on windows 2008 r2 hyper v.  1 is a 2003 server another is a 2008 r2 server and an ubuntu 11.04 LTS.  They all work fine.  I tried creating a new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and install goes great and it runs but I am having problems with communicating with my router.  When I try and ping it, it pings for 5 times then stops then back to 5 then stops.  I then downloaded CentOS 6.4 and it does the same thing, my other virtuals do not do this.  Any ideas on this?

CSV stuck in Redirected Access

Hello everybody,

I've searched topics about redirected access but still can't fix my issue as what I got.

I have a small Hyper-V cluster: Two IBM X3850X5 with Win2008R2 Enterprise, EMC Clariion CX4-240 FC Storage and FC switches. Only Hyper-V, SCVMM 2012 and multipath application (PowerPath) are installed on the servers. There were two VM on node A and one on node B.

I've created a CSV disk and a quorum disk. They worked normally for two weeks untill last Saturday CSV became Online(Redirected Access) on node A. Both VM failed over to node B. The root cause is still unknown.

I tried to turn off redirected access, pause/resume node A and rebooting. None works.

In multipath application, both CSV and witness disks are Alive. In storage managment, both servers and both LUns present in the same storage group.

Both disks present in Disk Management. But they just stuck Offline on node A. Their staus in Node B are Reservered.

Concerning partion corruption, I didn't Online the disks in Disk Management. What shall I do now?

Windows 8 Client Hyper-V Guest VMs NLB support

I wonder if Windows 8 Client Hyper-V supports guest VMs NLB. All the references I have found on technet or online for Windows 8 Client Hyper-V limitations are not clear whether it supports NLB or not..

I want to configure SharePoint 2013 WFEs VMs NLB on my sandbox which was built on Hyper-V client framework and all the online resources I have found seems like asking for "Enable spoofing of MAC addresses". I don't see this option in Client Hyper-V.

http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2012/08/16/how-to-configure-an-nlb-in-hyper-v-part-1/

I would appreciate if someone would respond and provide me clear answer on NLB support on Client Hyper-V on Windows 8.

Thanks,

Hi. I use Windows Server 2012 and many VM's on this server.

i run Windows Update and wait when it finish, but Windows Update paused. I still wait when finish install 2 updates - but long time never happens. And process-line have one position. When I get tired of waiting i go to VM and display switch to actually moment )

Is it possible to fix the display refresh? Because I can wait for hours (

Hard path limit of 8 in VM with Hyper-v virtual fibre channel?

$

Hello,

I am seeing a strange situation where I cannot exceed 8 paths in a vfc guest and wanted to see if anyone else has seen this.

I have server 2012 parent with Hyper-v and connecting to a storage controllers which have 16 target ports. 8 nodes, 2 ports each.

I have a brocade dual fabric and connect a single initiator to 8 targets in a zone on each fabric.

After enabling the zones I see on the parent 16 virtual ports in my qlogic qconvergedconsole on the Parent server. 8 on each HBA port. I go to my guest and I do not see a lun. I reboot the guest and check for a lun nothing.

After rebooting the server 2012, I check the vm and a lun is seen with 8 only paths. I check the parent and now I only see 4 virtual target ports per HBA.

I tried the same scenario with 4 node controllers and 4 target ports. Same behavior. 16 targets show up in HBA, after reboot of parent server only 8 ports.

Does Hyper-v have a hidden limit of only 8 paths and reduce the number of exposed virtual ports in the parent server?

Has anyone tried more than 8 paths and it work?

Thanks in advance.

Hello to all,

we are carrying out tests and checks on Hyper-v and i was wondering if it was possible something like this:

I have a server01 it is installed on Windows 2008 server with the Hyper-V role

I have an external storage iSCSI / FC configured with the hyper-v server01

the vm installed are fully hosted on the storage and they boot safely.

What happens if the server01 stops working?

I install on a new hyper-v server02 and mount external storage iSCSI / FC and restore the VM? (operation without export vm)

in domain environment microsoft lose something?

How to lock a VM to a specific CSV volume

$

Hey,

We have an Hyper-V cluster with 8 nodes; we are using CSV to store our VMs.

I'm looking into a way to lock 3 particular VM to a dedicated CSV volume.
I need my VMs to be always on that volume as I'm using some business copy scripts to duplicate that particular SAN drive to present it to another machine afterwards.

So is there a way to make sure a VM would always be hosted in a particular CSV volume? Or will I have to miggrate all VMs before I run my script to duplicate the CSV volume ?

Thanks in advance

How many Win 7 Virtual Machines can be hosted on a 8 Gig desktop just performing Powershell queries?

$

Hello,

Building a training system with a few desktops. One desktop will be a Domain Controller with 4 Gig of Ram, and the other desktop with 8 Gig of Ram I would like to run Hyper-V with as many Windows 7 VMs as possible.  With both of these machines connected to a wireless router, students would RDP to the desktop with the Windows 7 VMs, logon to a VM, and perform Powershell queries to the Domain Controller.

Is it feasible to use VMs with 512K for this (or do I need more RAM) and how many could I build/use which would give 'adequate' performance for this activity?  Just looking for some general thoughts/comments here with this.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your help! SdeDot

Number Keys don't always work

I've been noticing that when some of our users go to log onto their virtual PC the number pad keys don't always work.  If you look the numlock is lit but the keys don't work.  However if you turn the numlock off they keys work on the virtual PC, but when they go back to their local PC they don't work (obviously).  It doesn't always happen but enough times to make it annoying.

Windows 7 never boots and does an endless loop

Have Server 2012 on a HP ML370 G5.

In hyper-v I have made a few VM's, and all of them work fine minus windows 7.

I create a new Windows 7 VM, install looks t ogo great, the final step is the VM rebooting. When it does this, it goes into an endless loop.

DC1	18570	Critical	Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker	Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker-Admin	5/5/2013 11:42:10 PM

'Windows7' was faulted because the guest executed an intercepting instruction not supported by Hyper-V instruction emulation.

If the problem persists, contact Product Support.

DC1	18560	Critical	Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker	Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker-Admin	5/5/2013 11:42:10 PM

'Windows7' was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault. If the problem persists, contact Product Support.

Any ideas what might cause this? I believe when I was trying to resolve this issue before, I read it was a power setting. I tried setting it the recommended setting that was told(forget what that is now), and it did not help.

I have a freebsd VM and a windows 8 that load and run with no issues.

Hyper-V Replica Broker stuck in "Failed" status.

2 2012 standard servers in a cluster. Trying to add the replica broker so I can have my HA VMs replicated off site as a DR solution. I've tried to install the role over a dozen times, with a dozen different names, no nice.

I've changed the OU security to include the cluster's computer having the rights to create computer accounts. I've even tried to "stage" a computer before adding the role but it just complains that it is already in use in active directory. I'm at the end of my rope as to why this isn't working.

I've done everything that has been suggested in these forums and the blogs I could find on google.

Any help would be great. Thanks guys!
