Sleep and hibernation is working on Server 2012 with started hypervisor! I do not know why...

Hi,
I enabled Hyper-V role in the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 on testing computer (PC with i7 CPU and 16GB RAM). I found very strange behavior. The sleep mode was enabled and after command “powercfg /hibernation on” the hibernation is also working.

I tested sleep (S3) and hibernation with started hypervisor and with running virtual machine. I tested sleep and hibernation triggered by power button and even with time-out that was set in the Power Options (I set sleep after 1 minute and later hibernate after 1 minute and wait).

Sleep and hibernation is working! I do not understand why. Sleep and hibernation should be functional only on Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 and not on the Server 2012.

Some examples:
--------------------------------
Testing workstation (i7, 16GB RAM) with Server 2012 and with started hypervisor:
--------------------------------
C:\Users\Administrator>powercfg /a
The following sleep states are available on this system:

    Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use

0

This is really a complaint not a question.  I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years.  I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features.  I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out.  I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it.  This thing is a trainwreck!  There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine.  It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only.  I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi.  How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner?  I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?

Steps for free ESXi.

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.

5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!

Steps for Hyper-V

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.

5. Install server management tools pack.

6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.

7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.

8. Receive generic authentication error message.

9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!

10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!

Here is what I would prefer

I don't want to download any tools at all.  I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the  Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password.  It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console.  I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

Import Virtual Machine through different Hyper-V Versions

Hi.

I'm having trouble while trying to import a Virtual Machine that I have exported before.

Our server was a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. Now, we upgraded it to Windows Server 2012 Standard, installed the Hyper-V and when I try to import, the message below is shown.

How can I fix it? Did I lose all my VMs ?

Thanks!

Unable to passthrough physical drive server 2012 core

I'm having trouble with passthrough in Hyper-V on server 2012 core install I have just done. I followed the exact same steps on a 2008 machine and had no issues

Here we go in order

Power off VM's

Power off physical 2012 machine

Add hard disk to host machine (I've tried a couple, 1TB or 2TB)

Boot up physical machine, use disk manager to bring disk online and initialize, take disk offline

Edit one of my VM's add a hard disk (IDE or SCSI makes no difference) and try to use pass through to physical disk

Problem - Option to use physical disk is greyed out

What am I missing?

I'll add a screenshot once I'm allowed

Thanks

Hard path limit of 8 in VM with Hyper-v virtual fibre channel?

0

Hello,

I am seeing a strange situation where I cannot exceed 8 paths in a vfc guest and wanted to see if anyone else has seen this.

I have server 2012 parent with Hyper-v and connecting to a storage controllers which have 16 target ports. 8 nodes, 2 ports each.

I have a brocade dual fabric and connect a single initiator to 8 targets in a zone on each fabric.

After enabling the zones I see on the parent 16 virtual ports in my qlogic qconvergedconsole on the Parent server. 8 on each HBA port. I go to my guest and I do not see a lun. I reboot the guest and check for a lun nothing.

After rebooting the server 2012, I check the vm and a lun is seen with 8 only paths. I check the parent and now I only see 4 virtual target ports per HBA.

I tried the same scenario with 4 node controllers and 4 target ports. Same behavior. 16 targets show up in HBA, after reboot of parent server only 8 ports.

Does Hyper-v have a hidden limit of only 8 paths and reduce the number of exposed virtual ports in the parent server?

Has anyone tried more than 8 paths and it work?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

0

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Hyper-V Setup Questions

HI All,

I have a couple questions relating to a Hyper-V setup i am looking at currently. Everything is working good just looking to make sure its as good as it could be.

HP ML150G6 (2x 5504 Xeon, 32GB Ram, 6x 450GB 15K Raid 10)

Runs 2 hyper-v guests;

1x 2008R2 with DC, File/Print/ Exchange/ typical SBS functions.

1x 2008R2 RDS with about 15 users doing mainly MS Office work.

-My first question relates to the allocation of logical processors. The Xeon 5504 are quad-core NON hyper-threaded cpu's. Currently I have the CPU over allocated giving each guest 4 logical processors. Can someone please recommend a good split between these operating systems. currently the setup is only in the Lab with minimal load and everything is running very good. Minaly wondering if i should drop the DC to 2 logical processors instead of 4.

-I have both guests configure for dynamic memory. The DC starts with 4GB and the RDS with 512MB with 20% buffer. Is a 20% buffer recommended for RDS environment?

- Is it possible, and or recommended to use the same pass through disk for both guests? The disk will only be used for backup distination for each guest.

- Though not the correct forum i can't see one for Licensing.

If i have this setup with DC, exchange, RDS and 15 users what CALS with be required. I will be using Per User CALS.

15 User RDS CALs

15 Server CALS

Exchange CALS required or does Server CALS handle this?

Any others?

Thank you for your time. Also I did search these topics and got good infomation though i wanted a more specific answer taking these CPU's into account and also possible changes to best practice.

server 2008 r2 to server 2012 upgrade

Good morning everybody,

I know this question been asked many times and was answered, but I am not seeing a similar case like the one I am dealing with so I thought to go ahead and just ask any way.

we have 4 windows server 2008 r2 datacenter with hyper-v. they are in 2 clusters, where every 2 of them are nodes of one cluster.

all the VMs running in both clusters are windows server 2008 r2 enterprise. we use clustered shared volume.

so the question is:

is there a guide or a checklist that I can utilize to ensure a successful upgrade that you guys can help me with?

Thanks in advance.

HP NIC Teaming, Hyper-V, and Seemingly Random Connection Issues

0

Hello everyone. I have a bit of an issue with NIC teaming, HP hardware, and Hyper-V.

When a switch fails an a failover event is triggered I lose connectivity across several VMs. Now I have DL 580 G7s an we have added to quad port Intel NIC cards. Two of the adapters are teamed and presented to the guest OS as a single adapter for their LAN connection. The other adapters (used only for iSCSI connections) never give an issue.

My fix in the past has been to shut down the guest VM, remove the NIC from the VM configuration, power up an back down the VM, re-add the NIC, reconfigure it, and everything is good. it can then migrate across all the nodes without a problem. As you can guess this is quite painful and I do not want to have to do this any more.

Here's what I tried today that also worked (after I migrated a machine to another node and the NIC lost connectivity and I migrated it back to the originating node) - I shut down the guest OS, live migrated it over, then started it up and it worked just fine.

There seems to be some sort of issue with the NIC team driver being presented to the guest OS somehow. When the VM loses connectivity it can still ping the host OS an any other guest VMs on that node.

I have updated the NIC drivers and teaming software (as well as all the system firmware) to the latest version and played around with the config to no avail.

Has anyone else been able to solve this issue? Thanks!

please I have a senario in mind and I 'd like to know if it could be done ,

I ve got a machine with tow OS windows 7 and XP mode means the VM is the second one .

and I am connected throught this subnet xx.178.cc.cc. 255.255.255.0 and I want to know if it's possible to have the VM connected to the remote subnet xx.178.pp.pp  255.255.255.224  , taking into an account that the two nets have routing between them  means pings and telnets are successfully done .

please I want to have detailed answers if there will be any , because really  I am new in VMwares ,

your help would be reaaly apprecited.

isolating 3d games in guest vm

Is this at all possible with the free Hyper-V Server?

I have a server PC connected to a big screen in our living room, running a native installation of Windows 7 Media Center for TV, photos, etc. My kids are growing up so there is currently an increasing number of games being installed on this system, threatening its stability.

I would like to separate these installations into distinct virtual machines in a hypervisor, let's call them the Media VM and Gaming VM, that both would display full-screen on the monitor. I've understood that the 3D GPU requirements of the Gaming VM might present problems. There would also be some other VMs I use for development work, but these have no special requirements.

The hardware setup is one computer with one monitor, keyboard and mouse. I guess possible configurations could include:

  • the hypervisor somehow allows to switch display between Media VM or Gaming VM
  • or, the Media VM is always displayed on the monitor, and inside this a console or remote desktop tool can be used to show the Gaming VM
  • or, two graphics cards are used so each VM can own (by passthrough) its own GPU and the monitor gets connected with one cable to each graphics card
  • or, other setups?

Thanks

Installing Windows Driver Framework.

I've just bought a couple of new servers running Windows 2012, I'm stuck trying to shift a guest Hyper V machine from our old Windows 2008 server.  I can copy the machine over OK, but I cannot get the updated Hyper-V integration services installed.  On running the new integration services, it throws up a dialogue and I can see it updates the HAL, but then seems to be stuck in a loop saying "Installing Windows Driver Framework".  The guest O/S is SBS2008.  I have established that this isn't just a 2012 issue for me, as see the exact same issue if I shift the guest to a spare Windows 2008 R2 system (running Enterprise).  The source system where the guest is running quite happily and has done for 3 years is 2008 R2 standard.

Worth adding that I also seem unable to add a legacy network adapter, and the guest server is bang up to date with regard to windows updates.

This has stopped my migration dead in its tracks and also given me big doubts over our backup strategy.  Can anyone give me any pointers here please?

New to VMs. How to run 15 VM's on Hyper V.

Fairly new to hyper v and the all VM thing. I would like to run 15 Windows XP boxes at once. What would I need in terms of a machine to do so, without any slow downs? Right now I have a FX 8350 with 16gbs of ram and a single WD black HD. I am thinking I probably may need more ram and some sort of raid set up. What would you guys recommend?

Thanks

Hyper-V 2012: Dynamic Memory Masking in Guest?

0
0

Hi All,

Not new to virtualisation, however am pretty green to Hyper-V and liking the look of it so far.

Dynamic memory looks awesome, however I do see some "education" issues arising from the way memory is reported inside the guest. With VMware (where my background is) it doesn't matter how much memory is reclaimed, inside the guest this is always reported as the amount you specify for the guest. This appears to be different with Hyper-V dynamic memory where;

a) Memory is hot added as required up to the configured maximum which is reflected in task manager, perfmon, etc.

b) if a guest startup memory is configured to more that what it needs, then when memory is reclaimed task manager, perfmon, etc inside the guest show you are using more memory than what you actually are.

The issue I see senario A producing is that VM owners will see their server has less memory than what they have ordered and won't understand that memory will be hot added as needed, and also that programs that check for available ram before actually requesting it will throw errors (install of SCOM 2012 for instance). The only way I see getting around this while still using Dynamic Memory is to up the startup ram to be equal to the maximum ram, however this produces senario B where a guest appears to be using a lot more ram than it is once the reclaimation process takes place.

Long story short, use of Dynamic Memory effectively breaks the historic method of measuring memory utilsation. Is there a way to mask the back end Dynamic Memory activity for the guest ? If not, then is there a way I can show VM owners to effectively measure their memory utilisation in regard to consumed as a percentage of the maximum?

I really hope there is something I am missing here, as otherwise I see Dynamic Memory being a real hard sell to our business units.

What’s the best way to create an isolated lab with access to the internet?

0

Hi

I’ve been looking at a couple of solutions to do this and I was wondering what one is the best?

I used to use ISA Server but I don’t want to go down adding a dedicated VM to do my routing.

Is there a way where I can get one machine to do my work?

i.e.

Could I add two virtual NICS to my Active Directory Virtual DC. One connected to an external switch and the other to an internal switch?

Then get something to do my routing.

Thanks

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

Trond

Network Requirements & Real World Consolidation Ratios

0

Hi All,

Looking at creating a small 2~3 host Hyper-V environment for development which will be colo hosted and just wanting to check that the only requirement of the physical network for live migration/shared nothing functionality is that my VLAN is trunked (802.1q) between all the switches my hosts are physically connected to?

Also, I'm currently running MAPT across our fleet and would just like to get some feedback on real world consolidation ratios being achieved with Hyper-V. The hardware in our Hyper-V hosts will be as follows;

  • Single Intel Xeon E5-2620
  • 128GB 1600Mhz ECC DDR3
  • Intel 840 Pro based SSD (100k IOPS read & write)

Most of the VM's running in this environment will be low~medium web traffic with a a few Database Servers here and there. Any feedback on how many VM's (ball park figures) we should be able to achieve here? Currently it is being slated for up to 100 VM's per host, and I am wondering if this is overshooting it a bit.

Memory settings trough out my VM's,

Hello,

My terminal server config is lacking performance with RDP connections and im searching through some possible faults.

I figured NUMA was enabled and want to disable it to see if performance is better.

Let me explain my setup:

I have a ML350 G6 with dual E5606 2.13GHz and 32GB memory.

My host has Hyper-V installed as role with nothing more to do.

My VM's consist of:

DC (Single CPU) with static 3072MB memory.

TMG (Single CPU) with static 3072MB memory.

TS (4 CPU) with static 12288MB memory.

Im unable to add more static memory as the TS VM then wont start.

Let me calculate:

3072+3072+12288= 18432MB

meaning i should have 14336MB free memory.

NUMA is diabled.

My question is, why cant i add more static memory then the 12GB? Is that used for pagefile purpose?

The reason im going for a static memory setup is to see if preformance will be better.

With kind regards, René de Meijer. MIEGroup.

NIC Teaming and Powershell Errors

I am attempting to add a new VM Switch and add a NIC Team to it using PowerShell.  I am told this is the only way it can be done.  I have 2 physical Nics installed in the team and the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver is installed.

I am using the following PowerShell statement:

New-VMSwitch -Name "External Public" -MinimumBandwidthMode Weight -NetAdapterName "Network Team"

The error I get is that the Multiplexor driver is already bound to the Microsoft Virtual Switch Protocol and won't install the NIC's in the team.
Any help would be appreciated
