32 Bit VM

I have a question regarding a 32 Bit VM running on a 64 Bit Host. The scenario is as follow:

Running a Windows Server 2008 32 Bit OS on a Windows Server 2008 64Bit Hyper V Core. Will the 32 Bit OS still make use of the max 4Gig (3.5) RAM memory or is this less when running in a Virtual environment? I somewhere read that a 32 Bit OS VM will only use somewhere 2Gig RAM memory, but could be mistaken? Hope for some clarification.

HyperV management using gSoap

Hi Everyone,

I'm a newbee to HyperV in general. The task in hand is to manage hyperV server, for ESX I know one can use: gSoap (C++ generated code), Libvirt (Redhat library) etc. Do anyone know if HyperV exposes WSDL service to generate C/C++ code to manage/configure HyperV ?

Thanks!

Migrate from VMware to Hyper-V 2012 with single SAN

Hi We currently have a 2 node VMware cluster connected to an iSCSI SAN running esx 4.1. Our VMware maintenance runs out in just under a years time and we would like to plan a migration from VMware to hyper-v. All of our infrastructure sits on the SAN. (We do have replicated dr and backup but that's not important) What we want to do is migrate all guests from VMware to hyper-v with as little down time and risk as possible. We also have a 3 node hyper-v node connected to a much smaller iSCSI SAN which we have been using for testing. We have been exploring ways to get all our servers migrated, but the sticking point is the storage. We can host 5 of our 20 servers on the hyper-v storage but then we would run out of space. Is it feasible to migrate these 5 servers, then delete the LUNs from the VMware storage, recreate and attach to hyper-v and use to store more of the migrated devices? Is this a sensible approach, or is there a much simpler way that we've missed. For info, we are a high school, and don't have the finance to purchase more storage. We do have an education version of System Centre if this would make the process any simpler. We also run Veeam essentials for replication and backup, but its only currently licences for the VMware hosts. Any help/advice/pointers would be appreciated.

Hyper-V guests on AMD-based Dell servers - perceived peformance is poor but benchmarks are fine

We have a Hyper-V cluster with Windows Server 2012 (it had been Server 2008 R2 before with the same issue). The hosts have 4 12-core Opteron CPUs and 320 GB RAM.

Now, the perceived performance on the virtual machines is quite poor. This is, certain actions in certain applications take way longer than on a physical machine (while other actions in other applications are working fine).

I ran several benchmarks in multiple virtual and physical machines, but could not find a notable difference. CPU, disk, cache performance are perfect. RAM performance is rather poor compared to Intel systems (ca. 1900 MB/s while my i5 desktop shows 7500 MB/s), but I found that it's similarly poor on physical AMD-based servers (around 2100 MB/s, so it seems to be related to the CPUs or chipsets). (These physical AMD-based servers perform well, so the issue does not seem to be related to that RAM performance.)

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this? Are there any other things I could test or performance counters I could watch?

NIC Teaming and Powershell Errors

I am attempting to add a new VM Switch and add a NIC Team to it using PowerShell.  I am told this is the only way it can be done.  I have 2 physical Nics installed in the team and the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver is installed.

I am using the following PowerShell statement:

New-VMSwitch -Name "External Public" -MinimumBandwidthMode Weight -NetAdapterName "Network Team"

The error I get is that the Multiplexor driver is already bound to the Microsoft Virtual Switch Protocol and won't install the NIC's in the team.
Any help would be appreciated

Hyper-V and SNMP Monitoring

0

We use a combination of Dell Open Manage and IT Assistant to monitor SNMP traps for our Windows Servers.  We have just recently setup a 3 server Hyper-V 2012 failover-cluster and all appears to be working fine.  However on one host, and on the cluster IP, we are getting notifications every 30-60 minutes (and while it isn't every 30 or 60 minutes, it is in exactly 30 or 60 minute intervals) from IT Assistant as follows:

Device:[devicename] [IP], Service Tag:[ST], Asset Tag:[AT], Date:04/08/13, Time:07:25:38:000, Severity:Warning, Message:A HyperV Host has been modified

Obviously bracketed items have been masked since it shows our info.  We do not have any scheduled jobs running on these servers and at this time only have 5 VMs attached to the cluster which are not doing much right now, so we cannot track down what would be modified on the host on such consistent intervals .  Anyone have any info on how, what, when, and why Hyper-V would send out SNMP messages?

Backing up VM that has separate vhd for pagefile transient error

I have a new install of a VM running Server 2012. I plan on replicating so I created a 10gb vhdx fixed disk to hold the pagefile. The disk size is a little bigger than 10gb so lets say 10.2gb. I created a single pagefile of 10gb and applied it to Drive e: (The separate PAgefile VHDX). So there is just a little space left. This VM is running on Hyper-V3. Hyper-V3 is running as a Role and Feature of Server 2012 Standard with GUI. When I run the Windows backup the backup fails wit ha Transient error on the child partition. To test that it might be the pagefile vhdx I did the same thing with another Server. Same thing. On the Second Server I reduced the Pagefile to 2gb but the disk is still 10gb. Ran the backup. It got to 11gb and although the backup was still running the byte count was not going up. I went to bed and let it run. I checked it the next morning and it completed without errors. So I ran the backup again. And again the count paused at 9gb but the backup was still running. I left for work and have not checked on it since. Back to the first server, I deleted the server I created with the separate pagefile and created a new install. This time I left the pagefile on the single vhdx drive. Rand the backup. Completed without errors. Is there a bug when backing up a VM that has a separate vhdx serving to store the pagefile? Am I suppose to leave a certain amount of space free on the pagefile drive? Why the long delay when backing up when I reduced the size of the pagefile? Ugh!!!!. The first server is a production server and the other VM, Server 2003 running exchange, backed up just fine. I will do more testing when I get home but I have replicated the problem on 2 different servers.

Hyper-v Network Setup

I've been having a hell of a time setting up a network for a vm - My server has a quad port network port where two nic ports are bonded and another ive setup to handle hyper-v network flow. At first I tried to create an external adapter from the bonded adapter but I could only get local network. I'm trying through the dedicated adapter I setup but I cant even get a local network. My goal in all this is to let the vm's talk to the outside world and connect to the internet.

Here is what I'm working with:

Host Adapters:

How The above network is setup:

This probably seems all confusing and I'd be willing to start all over but I could use some help. Its being hosted at a datacenter and we were given the subnet 192.168.111.xx for our servers. Thank You for any help.

Ping cannot resolve local host but nslookup can on Server 2012 core.

ping cannot resolve google.com

nslookup can.

The only thing I can possibly think that would cause this is the automatic tcpipv6 DNS servers on the iSCSI interfaces.

Is there a powershell command to disable protocals on the ports used exclusively for iSCSI?  Or is there a remote management way to do this?

Server 2008 R2 as Hyper-V VM, Remote Desktop No Longer Connects...

Can still connect via Hyper-V Management, and have LogMeIn installed, so can still access. But is a pain.

Nothing settings-wise has changed: Remote Desktop still enabled, user in RD User Group. Can even telnet to it on 3389 and connect. But not via straight RDP.

Also, is the only VM that has this issue--all others connect via RDP just fine.

Thoughts?

Hi,

I need you suggestions:

I plan to install a fresh installation for Exchange, SQL, backup server, Proxy, IIS and Active Directory on HyperV 3 with high availability in a case of failure of physical host.

- I will have 2 exchange Server with 12 Gb of RAM each.

- The Domain controller will have 4 Gb of RAM each

- The SQL Server wikk have 8 GB of RAM

- The IIS server will have 4 Gb of RAM

- The backup server will have 4 Gb of RAM

How many servers do I need? and how many ressources do I have to allocate to the physical hosts?

Thanks in advance

Cannot start Hyper-V VMs

Hello everybody,

I am looking for help with Hyper-V running on WS2012 and any help is much appreciated. Thanks for your time in advance.

Everything was working fine and one day I started getting this error while starting any VM:

[Window Title]
Hyper-V Manager

[Main Instruction]
An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).

[Content]
'<vmname>' failed to restore virtual machine state.

Virtual machine '<vmname>' could not be started because the hypervisor is not running.

[Expanded Information]
'<vmname>' failed to restore virtual machine state. (Virtual machine ID E8140A6D-BC78-4185-B1F2-FC058429922F)

Virtual machine '<vmname>' could not be started because the hypervisor is not running (Virtual machine ID E8140A6D-BC78-4185-B1F2-FC058429922F).

I automatically started from verifying my BIOS settings for Intel-VT and it is enabled. One thing I have done is I imported BCDEdit settings for my boot options (backup) as I was messing with dual boot. Could that be related to the problem?

Best Regards,

Alex

----------------

I was looking for this for so long, but I actually figured it out in several minutes after posting. It seems that after modifying the BCD settings the hypervisor automatic startup type is disabled. So what I did is I re-enabled auto-startup of hypervisor and rebooted the system:
bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto
It was a little bit confusing so I hope if someone has the same issue this will help.. Good luck!

Error on live migration

Hello,

I have been doing a live migrations with several machines and I am having an issue with only one of the VM's. It will not do a live migration and gives me the following error.

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the (ServerName) server because of the error: Storage migration for virtual machine 'SERVER' (2C4C28E1-791A-4474-A74C-1D4E7436D134) failed with error 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check).' (0x80070017).

Migration did not succeed. Mirror operation failed for the source VHD file 'I:\SERVER\SERVER.vhdx' to the destination file 'D:\IMAGES\SERVER\SERVER.vhdx': 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check).'('0x80070017').
Unknown error (0x8000)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

Anyone have any suggestions? the server is running fine and there are no other errors that can lead me to the problem?

Thanks,

Gavin...

hyper-v parent partition raid best practice

hello all,

i have 8x300gb 10k sas

parent partition will have nothing other than the Hyper-V role installed. What is recomended RAID config for the parent partition? Would 2 disks in RAID 1 for the parent?

i will also have 3 vms, a file server, webserver and an exchnage serve in the future. i would like to house each vhd on its on disk.

thanks.

Live Migration Network

Just clarifying... Live migration should be L2 segregated and non-routeable correct? I will have 2 nics on each server (Server 2012) split between two non-stacked switches with trunked VLANs one if which dedicated to LM traffic (again non-routed).

Preferred Shared Storage Solution

0

I have a small network at home where I like to set up various products for testing and I would like to set up some sort of shared storage for my Hyper-V boxes.  I can't afford a SAN solution so I would like to create something that I can hobble together that Hyper-V would be happy with but allow me to explore the Hyper-V features available only with shared storage.  What is the recommended shared storage solution in a case like this?

Thanks

ESXi 5.1 as a Hyper-V VM

0
0

I did  search and came up empty so I thought I'd ask:  Is it possible to install a VM in Hyper-V that is running ESXi 5.1?  I know that you can run an ESX VM under ESX and have both of them operating VMs but I don't know if you can run ESX as a VM under Hyper-V.  I tried to install it but I get to a point where ESX complains that it has no NICs (apparently it doesn't have a driver for the NIC Hyper-V provides) but before I invest a lot of time into this, I wanted to check to see if it is even possible.  Has anyone done this before?

Thanks

Hyper-V 2012 with guest OS running 2003r2 losing network after switch ARP table showing 0000.0000.0000 for only VMs running 2003r2

I have built a Hyper-V failover cluster using Windows 2012 on 3 Dell PowerEdge M520 Blades connected to a Dell EqualLogic PS4100 array. The blades plug into Dell PowerConnect M6348 switches in the back of the chassis. The network cards are Broadcom. In total 12 cards, 4 are plugged into the iSCSI network. 4 are teamed using the inbuilt windows teaming with networks created to carry internal production vLANs, CSV, heartbeat, Live Migration and Management. The other 4 are used in a team for carrying external DMZ vLAN traffic.

All updates applied and all drivers and firmware are up to date.

I have migrated and now have 18 guest OS running on this cluster, Windows Server 2003r2, 2008r2 and 2012, a few client OS, XP and Windows 7.

The problem I am having is only with the 2 Windows Server 2003r2 and 1 XP VMs. Every 20-30 minutes the VMs lose the ability to connect to anything outside of the vLAN they are assigned too. They can ping each other but not the gateway. Looking in the ARP table of the switch the mac address for these VMs change and become 0000.0000.0000. Before they change to this they are the static assigned mac assigned to the VM. To get the VMs network to work outside of the IP range it is on I have to just simulate the network cable being unplugged. Be that repairing the connection on the VM, live migrate the machine to another host or just change the setting to not connected and back. 20-30 minutes later the mac address becomes 0000.0000.0000 again.

An ipconfig on the VM show the correct mac at all times. No events in the events logs at all when this happens, host or VM.

I have tried the following;

Fully patched the VMs

Update the host integration services

Removed the adapters and added new ones

Changed IP

Changed IP Range

Changed MAC address of VM

Removed hidden devices

Removed entries in the register for network adapters

Tried legacy adapter where possible

Disabling TCP Task Offload settings, physical and VM

Enable VMQ and disabling VMQ, physical and VM

Yet still after 20-30 minutes the VM lose connection outside of the IP range they are on, the MAC address in the switches ARP table changes 0000.0000.0000 hence the loss of network outside of the IP range.

I have check for rouge devices on the network, doubled checked all VMs to make sure no duplicated MAC address have been used. I have gone over our switch settings but cannot find anything here that would or possibly only affect VMs running 2003r2 or XP. I don't believe it is a switch network problem anymore as it is only these 3 VMs with 2003r2 or XP that are having this issue, the other 15 VMs that are 2008r2, 2012 or Win 7 are working great on the same hardware connecting to the same switches in the same IP ranage.

I am now at a total loss as to what to try next to get the 2003r2 and XP VMs.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Barry
