Hyper-V VM network problem after moving
VM Clustering in Hyper-V Failover Cluster
Hi,
Setup environment:
2 Host is configured with Hyper-V Failover Cluster (Window 2008 R2). The server is connected to SAN using Fiber Channel.
Now I would like to configure SQL 2008 Failover Cluster in this environment. So one VM will be on Host 1 and another VM will in Host 2.
Can I configure my SQL Server Failover within Hyper-V Cluster environment. If yes, any guidance and if not any other suggestions.
Thanks

Hi
My Hyper-V host has just received this warning in the event log. Hyper-V host is Windows 2008R2 64bit, I have two Hyper-V host's, each running 4 VM's. Only one is generating this warning.
"The certificate used for server authentication will expire within 30 days. Remote access to virtual machines will not be possible after the certificate expires. Please renew or recreate the certificate".
I have received no certificate errors, just this warning once. Will the VM's actually stop working if no certificate is renewed?
I have found these two links, I assume these are correct, and no other way to generate a new certificate?

Can't access network from Server 2008 R2 Virtual machine
I have a Windows 2008 Server R2 with Hyper-V. On this hyper-v, I have created two virtual machine, one with Server 2003 and one with Server 2008.
I have also created a virtual network.
The first machine (2003) works perfectly, recognized the virtual NIC and got an IP address (dhcp).
On the second virtual machine, it added a network card, but this one has no network access... I always got an 169.254.150.xx address...
Any idea?
Thank you very much,
Eric
Failed to modify device 'Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port' Anti-Virus Disabled
I cannot get my hyper V guests assigned to my virtual switches. I keep getting Failed to modify device 'Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port'. I have tried everything on the first two pages of google. I also tried to export the VMs and reimport them. Nothing seems to work. Is there anything in the XML file that ties a VM to a vswitch? I blew away all the virtual switches and created new ones, not sure I used the same names.

The VLAN function of Hyper-V Virtual Network
I'm confused with the VLAN function of the following two locations of Hyper-V Virtual Network. The following 1st screenshot is the settings for VM, the 2nd is Virtual Network Manager. What is the different between these two? Thanks.

Guest boots into repair after restoration of Host
Hi all,
I had the pleasure of restoring my host OS with the guest OS off a backup image made with windows backup. No problem with the restoration, until I see the guest Hyper-V will only boot into startup repair. The host OS is Server 2008 R2, as is the guest. I am now restoring the full system again, but any ideas as to why the restore, which is an image created days ago, leaves the guest OS unbootable in a startup repair?
By the way, the host is a 2008 R2 DC and the guest is 2008 R2 Exchange 2010.
Thanks, and free coffee to anyone that can help. If I need to post anything else please let me know.

Querying Msvm_VirtualSwitch using WMI throws error
hi,
i am trying to query Msvm_VirtualSwitch using WMI, but getting "Generic Failure" in powershell. I think I need to reload MOF using
mofcomp.exe pathToMofFile
but I don't know the MOF name. Can anybody provide information on why would this error happen?
Powershell snippet:
gwmi -Namespace root\virtualization -Class Msvm_VirtualSwitch
Output: Generic error
When I do this from C# receive next error:
WMI ManagementException: Message=Generic failure ErrorCode=Failed query_string=select ElementName from Msvm_VirtualSwitch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Serg
Hyper-V/Server 2008 R2 Core/PowerShell
Hi Everyone.
I don't know if this question has been answered already, but I find this extremely difficult to find any information on, as there is simply too much; does anyone have any good ideas on how to write a decent shell script with PowerShell 2.0, for a Windows Server 2008 R2 (Standard, Enterprise, and/or Datacenter), to manage Hyper-V?
WSB Backup Errors (using Hyper-V writer)
I have a 2008 SP2 server with Hyper-V. All VMs reside on 3 RAID1 volumes (3 or 4 VMs per volume). 16GB RAM installed. Backup target is a USB 2.0 1TB drive hanging off of the server. The server itself has roughly 2 - 3GB free RAM. Running a Core install. Total of 11 VMs, 2 are always offline during the backups. 10 2003 SP2 x86 VMs and 1 2000 SP4 x86 VM. The 2 offline VMs are 2003 SP2 x86.
The target disk has a capacity of 931.49GB and there is 528.80GB free. 26 copies are on disk.
I'm receiving these errors, sometimes, not all of the time. For example, I had successful backups from the 13th through the 17th, but the 18th through today (the 20th) have failed. I have had previous failures as well. I did upgrade the 2008 server to SP2 on the evening of the 17th. Backups occur at 2:30 AM, so the failure on the 17th was while the server was still running SP1 (but I had a hotfix or two surrounding WSB & Hyper-V backups installed at that time). The performance options are configured for "Always perform a full backup". For some reason the backup disk appears in this list (as "Full backup"). Here are the errors (I only copied one of each, but some errors have multiple notices in the Event Log):

Pass-through disk: Very Bad performance
Hi,
I'm using Pass-through Disk on Hyper-v Server 2008 R2 and I note very bad disk performance.
I'm using a Dell Host, Q-logic FC Adapter, and HP MSA SAN.
On the same Host, I compared 2 situations:
First, a VM (2008 R2) with pass-through disk connected on SCSI controller, HD tune measure 89,8 MB/s !! Very bad.
Secondly, the same VM on the same host I attached a Virtual Hard disk located on the SAN. HD tune measure 1773 MB/s!!
It seems that pass-through mode degrade disk performance.
I think problem doesn't come from SAN because I get very good results with Virtual Hard Disk on the same VM.
Is anyone have an idea ??
Thanks a lot
issue with virtual machines in hyper v
I have hypr v install and attached to my home network using the wireless nic and have access to the internet. Ip is 192.168.1.70 and dns is local 127.0.0.1. I set an external connection in hyper v and noticed it gave that connection the ip 192.168.137.1 in tcp/4. I set up the a windows 7 vm to use this external connection but I dont have internet access or cannot ping the host hyper v. I setup the virtual machine to use 192.168.1.99 as an ip and this nothing? What am I supposed to set the virtual machine's ip to:

Problemas com Live Migration em um cluster Windows 2008R2, Hyper-V e Storage DAS.
Boa tarde,
- Storage já entregou 3 LUNs para o cenário, disponibilizei os volumes ao cluster, já adicionados e visualizados no c:\cluster storage em ambos os nós;
- Redes Virtuais configuradas em ambos os hosts com mesmas configurações: 1 placa para o Heartbeat, 2 para movimentações das VMs (sendo uma para a rede LAN comum e 1 para a DMZ) e uma placa para o Gerenciamento dos hosts;
Pedro Barbosa

Hyper-V NIC usage
Hello,
I am new to Hyper-V and I am currently reading a book about it.
Within the book the following list is printed which describes for what features I should provide a dedicated NIC. This list is for a two node Hyper-V cluster
- Parent Partition
- Virtual Machines
- Private Network - CSV
- Private Network - Live Migration
- iSCSI with MPIO enabled
- iSCSI with MPIO enabled
And here is the part I do not understand. A NIC is being provided for the CSV which will hold the files for the VMs. So what is the iSCSI ones for? If I want to attach LUNs directly to the VMs?
If someone could bring some light into that for me that would be great.
Thank you

Host and VMs losing connection during Windows Update
I setup test Network with two private virtual LANs. I connected those two LANs using virtual RRAS server.
RRAS server has the third virtual NIC that is connected to my LAN and is connected to the Internet. I set it up, so my private LANs could have connection to the Internet and use Windows Update. I do not have any problems on my virtual LANs. I can go to the Internet and I can use Windows Update.
The problem is with RRAS server. I can connect to the Internet, but I cannot use Windows Update. When I try to use it, I receive the 80072EE2 error. I tried to fix it, but nothing works.
After additional troubleshooting, I found that the problem could be with the Hyper-V, not Windows Update.
As soon as I click on Run button in the Windows Update screen, all my VMs and my Hyper-V host lose connection to everything else. I cannot ping anything on the LAN or on the Internet. I cannot ping my host or VMs from any other machine on my LAN. During this time, ping from my host gives me “General Failure” message.
My Hyper-V host has two NICs. One of them has static IP and I use it to connect to the host remotely. Another NIC does not have IP assigned and I use it for my VMs. Now only RRAS server uses it.
Any ideas?
Thank you.
Thank you. Eric.
