Reloading the OS and keeping the same vm configs

$

Hi,

I need to wipe the OS on my Hyper-V 2012 server. However, the OS will be installed and the hardware will remain the same. Am I right in thinking that if I import the virtual machine via the import option, the config cand IPs etc will be kept the same?

Thanks

VM CPU high, host CPU low

$

I've been doing a lot of reading on this topic and it makes sense but there's still one question that I don't think I'm seeing the answer to:

If I have one VM that is going to potentially utilize large amounts of CPU, how do I make sure it can do so when needed?

We have a test HyperV server with a single quad core processor and the maximum amount of virtual processors I can assign to a single VM appears to be 4.  According to what I think I'm reading in this post and various articles, that means that any given single VM can only ever gain access to a fraction of the total processing power that the server has to offer - is this correct?

No matter what we seem to throw at a couple of VMs we have running we can never get the host's CPU usage to go over 15%...

I realize that if a single server utilizes near maximum resources a given server has to offer it is probably not a good candidate for virtualization BUT there are situations where a server will typically use nominal resources and on occasion require significantly more (say 70% of the overall processing power) in which case I'd like to not limit it for what seems to be no good reason (assuming all other VMs can survive on the remaining 30%).

Sorry if I'm missing something!  Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Error on live migration

Hello,

I have been doing a live migrations with several machines and I am having an issue with only one of the VM's. It will not do a live migration and gives me the following error.

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the (ServerName) server because of the error: Storage migration for virtual machine 'SERVER' (2C4C28E1-791A-4474-A74C-1D4E7436D134) failed with error 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check).' (0x80070017).

Migration did not succeed. Mirror operation failed for the source VHD file 'I:\SERVER\SERVER.vhdx' to the destination file 'D:\IMAGES\SERVER\SERVER.vhdx': 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check).'('0x80070017').
Unknown error (0x8000)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

Anyone have any suggestions? the server is running fine and there are no other errors that can lead me to the problem?

Thanks,

Gavin...

HyperV guest loads slow on Win2008R2

$

this is by far one of the strangest things I have seen. I have a win 2008R2 cluster with a CSV. the CSV itself is on an iSCSI storage (hitachi HUS 110) basic config of the two hosts in the cluster is

  • Dell R610
  • Win 2008 R2 Enterprise with all patches
  • 64GB
  • 1 NIC for host access
  • 2 NICs for guest VM access
  • 2 NICs for iSCSI

these machine work great and I can load a 2008R2 test guest machine on them in less than 90 seconds

after the above config is running for over a year, I now need to add a new host. the new host is

  • Dell R620 (Still intel but different CPU)
  • same Win 2008 R2 Enterprise with all patches
  • 64GB
  • 1 NIC for host access
  • 2 NICs for guest VM access
  • 2 NICs for iSCSI

I added this new host to the domain and to the cluster, I gave it access to the CSV and I tried loading the same guest machine that loads in 90 seconds in the other hosts. the machine loads in about 6 minutes. no matter how many times I try this the old hosts load the machine in about 90 seconds and this new host in around 6 minutes

to eliminate any problems with the iSCSI connection, I added a new LUN and directly accessed it from the new host and I was working at around 300MB/s so no problem there. I also tested the connection between the other hosts and the new one and network is working fine there too.

to eliminate problems in HyperV, I copied the machine to the local disk of the new host and it loaded in less than 20 seconds.

now is the point were things get a lot stranger: in my tests I tried installing a fresh windows guest machine to the CSV from the new host. I noticed that while the fresh windows was installing, my test guest was loading in less than 90 seconds even on the new host (I repeated this a few times). If I paused the fresh install guest and tried loading the test guest again it loaded in 6 minutes. and again after I resumed the guest installation the test guest loaded fast.

after the fresh windows was also loaded, I ran tests loading the fresh window and my test machine. each one of them loaded in about 5-6 minutes when I tried loading them separately. however when I started both of them in the same time they both loaded in around 2.5 minutes

it seems that the iSCSI disk access is only working if it is under some load (although I never got to above 10% utilization according to the task manager)

does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

hyper-v network virtualization gateway

Hi

I am planning a small testlab for Hyper-V network virtualization and SCVMM 2012 SP1. Now I am confused about the virtualization gateway. My understanding is that when the VMs needs external connection (Internet, other physical host etc.) then I need a virtualization gateway. Right?

So, is it possible to configure a Hyper-V Host itself or a VM as a virtualization gateway for a testlab?

Moreover, when you configure a virtualization Gateway with Windows Server 2012 can you manage it through SCVMM 2012 SP1or do you need maintain it manually?

Thx

Configuring Hyper-V DC with internal network

$

Dear folks,

I am trying to set an DC with DNS & DHCP for at the location. Now this is the situation;

My host has 4 NIC's. The company has 2 ISP's with differend subnets(networks). I've combined those 2 networks(NIC 1 & NIC 4) as a Team(Team 1) with NIC teaming option.
I am using NICs 2 & 3 as Internet interfaces for the 2 ISP's(connected to the 2 switches that use differend subnets).

I have installed hyper-v on the host. Within the hyper-v i've installed an vm (win2012DC).

Now I am wondering is it possible to configure this vm-DC as an internal network so u can connect physical machines to it? Without gooing external of course? And how could I do that?

Can anyone here please help me out with this subject? I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

Kerim Tupkovic

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Server Core unable to create VMs in CSV, out of memory or disk space

Hello everybody,

I´ve deployed and configured a Hyper-V cluster based on Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Server Core. I´ve also presented to the cluster two LUNs based on a SAN solution provided by HP Eva, these LUNs have been attached to the available storage and transformed into Clustered Shared Volumes (CSV). So far so good, the cluster executes failover normally and everything has been configured accordingly and seems to work out as promised, however when I want to create a new VM in one of the CSV volumes , by saving the VHD in it, for example, \\hyperv-03\C$\ClusterStorage\Volume2 , the process fails and Hyper-V displays the following error message:

None of the nodes is experiencing a CPU or Memory overutilization so there´s no way that a Server Core will run out of resources for no reason at all. After further evaluation I found out that a WMI process could be responsible, in this case WmiPrvSE.exe, it seems to be a known issue, so I applied the following hotfix:

Handle leak in WmiPrvSE.exe process on a Windows 8-based or Windows Server 2012-based computer

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2790831

But surely enough nothing have changed, I keep on killing the process by using cmdlet Stop-Process but it appears again and again, so I wonder whether this might be the root cause or not, because quite frankly Resource Monitor shows otherwise, in fact there´s no performance or resources overutilization.

Could someone please provide a more insightful analysis of this issue?, or even better if it has happened before, could someone provide a workaround?

Thanks in advance for your valuable help!.

How to get "internal" network with internet access

$

I wonder if anyone can help with the following:

I want to create a test domain network with DNS, DHCP etc running, but don't want these to run on my physical network. All very doable with an internal network I hear you say. Thing is, I want internet access for the internal network as well. I am not sure how to configure this in Hyper-V. What I would do in Virtualbox is the following:

A) Host connected to subnet 192.168.0.0

B) Virtualbox internal network set up on 192.168.2.0

VM1. pfSense (FreeBSD router distribution) with 2 x virtual nics (1 bridged to physical 192.168.0.x, 1 attached to internal 192.168.2.1) - set as default gateway for other machines on "Internal" network. Handles internet access for machines on"Internal" subnet and prevents DHCP etc on "internal"  messing with main "physical" subnet.

VM2. WS2012 Domain controller running DHCP, DNS etc (1x NIC attached to "Internal" network 192.168.2.x)

VM3+. Other WS2012 members and client machines (various) (all attached to "Internal" network 192.168.2.x)

How to achieve something similar in Hyper-V? I have read the overview for the virtual network switch and have to say I am confused. It seems you can get internet access only by using the external switch (presumably then my DC is going to try to give out DHCP addresses etc on my 192.168.0.x "physical" network and my DHCP clients will pick up addresses from my physical router (neither of which I want)).

Any assistance much appreciated.

HyperV management using gSoap

Hi Everyone,

I'm a newbee to HyperV in general. The task in hand is to manage hyperV server, for ESX I know one can use: gSoap (C++ generated code), Libvirt (Redhat library) etc. Do anyone know if HyperV exposes WSDL service to generate C/C++ code to manage/configure HyperV ?

Thanks!

Server manager has detected that the processor on this computer is not compatible with Hyper-V

Server manager has detected that the processor on this computer is not compatible with Hyper-V.  To install this roll, the processor must have a supported version of hardware-assisted virtualization and that feature must be turned on in the BIOS.

I have Dell PE 2950 , Intel VT enabled and no go, replaced MB and Procs still not go.

How to move a virtual machine back to 2008R2 from 2012

I am not going to be able to switch all of my hyper-v Servers from 2008R2 to 2012 at one time and if I have a problem on a 2012 server and the only other available server is a 2008R2.

Is there a best practice way of doing this?

What I have tried so far that seems to have worked is (using the Hyper-V manager on each server and copying folders back and forth etc.) . . . .

Export guest on the 2008R2 server
Import guest on the 2012 server
Test on the 2012 server
Export on the 2012 server
Replace the XML file in the Virtual Machines directory of the guest with the original EXP file from the export from the 2008R2 server
Import the guest on the 2008R2 server

Cannot RDP into PC

Hey everyone!

Alright, this is my first question i'm asking here so bear with me. Here is what I have:

I have a windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Hyper-V running. Hyper-V has 4 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machines running on it. These 4 have custom ports set for RDP so I can remote in anywhere and have access to all of my files and what not. The ports I have set are all opened in my firewall. Now the problem comes in when i restart one of the virtual computers. I will be able to RDP in but after restart I cant. I have to restart it some 10 more times and test it every time until i get it working.

It doesn't seem to make a difference if I am inside or outside of my network. If i try locally and with the IP address I have no luck. And yes, the Windows 7 machines all have static IPs. Im clueless, any help?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Hyper-V and Windows 8

Hello

I am setting up a home lab environment on HP Proliant Microserver.  I have installed Hyper-V 2012 on the server and want to connect to it from my Windows 8 desktop.  I have enabled the Hyper-V feature on the desktop, but cannot connect to Hyper-V (nor can I ping the server, but the server can ping the desktop).  The server has a single NIC with an IP of 192.168.0.100 and the desktop 192.168.0.110 and they are both in the same Workgroup.  I have enabled Remote Desktop on the server, but the Firewall seems to have all inbound traffic blocked.

If this was a standard Windows 2008 server I could enable inbound ICMP traffic in the advanced firewall, but I have little experience of Windows 2012 Core.  How do I configure the firewall to allow inbound ICMP traffic?  I have triednetsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 but I think this command has been deprecated.  Or could ther be another reason why I can't connect to Hyper-V on the server?

Thanks

Tony

Hyper v 2012 Migration

I am currentl planning a new Hyper v stratagy because our current environment is over  provisioned and under resourced.

I have a 2 node Hyper v 2008 cluster

2 DL380 Gen 6 2x 2.5 8 Core Intel processors 150 GB RAM

I plan to build a new Windows 2012 Hyper V3 Cluster (Single node) using the new Gen 8 DL380. Migrate the VMs from one of the 2008 nodes too the new host using the free MVMC Microsoft Virtual machine Converter.(No SCVMM).This will evacuate one of the existing Gen 6 nodes. Upgrade the node to Windows 2012 Hyper V3 add to the cluster. Rebalance the VMs on the now 2 node cluster. Evacuate the final node VMs to the 2 node cluster. Re-build the final node to Windows 2012 Hyper V3 add to the cluster.

Will MS Processor compatibility allow for this? - Are there any other tools for reporting a nd statistics that can be utilised for the before and after scenario? - Do i need to convert the disks to VHDx? If yes is it best to v2v the old machines or will MVMC do this?

I need to migrate some existing machines to a new cluster is a there a free tool like MAP8 but more designed for the doing rather than the planning that i can use?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Win2003 SP2 VM won't boot to safe mode

$

I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 VM set up in Hyper-V on my Windows Server 2008 R2 server.  The VM was created as an export from AppAssure 5 export to Hyper-V Virtual Standby.  This particular server won't complete the boot but "sits" at the Windows splash screen indefinitely (I've let it run for two hours with no change).  I specifically use the work "sits" vs. "hangs" because the progress bar continues to move and the CPU usage fluctuates between 20 and 30%.

AppAssure T3 support want me to try to boot into safe mode but I'm unable to do so.  I'm connecting to the VM through Hyper-V manager on my local Windows 7 PC.  I have inserted the integration services disk in the vmguest and it shows that keyboard input is being captured but it doesn't seem to recognize the F8 keystroke.

Before I try to run startup recovery from install I was hoping someone here might be able to offer insight into why I'm unable to boot to safe mode.  I do have one other VM server created through the AppAssure export and I can boot normally or into safe mode with that one.

Thanks in advance for any insight provided.

Windows Server 2012 Failover Cluster Virtual Fibre Channel Adapter Live Migration Error

Hello,

I've got a 3 node cluster running Windows Server 2012 on HS22 IBM Blades with 8GbFC HBA's connecting to a XIV SAN.  I am trying to get the virtual HBA's working in Hyper-V Guest running Windows 2008 R2.

I first created 2 virtual SAN Switches one connected to each port on my physical HBA (each physical port connects to a separate fabric).

I add two Virtual HBA's in my Guest, one to each VSAN Switch.

When I go to Zone the HBA's I only see side A of the virtual HBA's not both A and B.  On each fabric I should see two (A and B) WWPN but I only see one.

I can add disk and everything works, however when I go to Live migrate I get the following error due to side B not being zoned.

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine Win2012_01' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'Win2012_01' failed at migration destination 'hv-cl07-c2'. (Virtual machine ID 2CE90D02-083C-4012-ACA1-BE8D35EFCA33)
