Hyper-V on Hyper-V

I have created several volumes on our EqualLogic PS6010X and I have two Hyper-V hosts (host1 and host2) using Dell Power Edge R710 servers with Windows Server 2008 R2.

First, I connected those volumes using iSCSI Initiator on Host1 and were able to make them online on Host1 Disk Management on Windows Server 2008 R2 as Disk 1, Disk 2, Disk 3, etc.

Then, I connected those volumes using iSCSI Initiator on host2 after giving iqn access control for host2 on each volumes.

All working good, however when I checked the Disk Management on host2, those volumes were visibled, but the disks were not in the same order as on host1. I just wonder if this will become a problem, since I plan to continue using Failover Cluster on those hosts.

If not ok, how to make the volumes the same order on host1 and host2 Disk Management?

I have tried several ways to fix the problem without success, such as by removing and recreating those volumes and I was able to make those volumes (disks) in the same order on host1 and host2 by selecting and connecting the volumes on host2 iSCSI Initiator one by one in the right order. But after I rebooted host2, it automatically changed the disk order in host2 Disk Management which was not the same order as in host1 again.

Your assistance in this matter is much appreciated.

Thanks

Dual NIC problems with Hyper-V

Hi,

I am having an issue on a server with 2 NIC's that I am testing Hyper-V on.

My physical setup is 2 NIC's > unmanaged switch > router. Both NIC's on the same subnet and both connected to the switch.

The Hyper-V host is also a domain controller with DNS installed, which I know is not recommended but I was looking to use the server to test out a few different Xenapp deployments.

I set the 2nd NIC up as an external virtual network and unticked the box for allow OS to share the network adapter.

NIC 1 was set up to serve DNS requests and is the physical NIC on the DC.  My first VM, lets call it CTX01 was joined on to the domain but took a lot longer than expected.  The reboot took ages, sitting on applying computer settings then applying users settings for about 10 mins each.  CTX01 didn't register its own record in DNS and had numerous errors and warnings in the event log.  Kerberos, LDAP, unable to find domain controller, WINLOGON and group policy delays, DNS server not responding etc.

The NIC properties on the VM has its DNS server address pointing to the IP of NIC 1, which it can ping fine and it is on the same subnet.

If I only use 1 physical NIC on the host and share it with the VM's I don't have any issues at all, everything runs smoothly.

Can anyone tell me what I should be doing when using 2 NIC's in this way please, is there anything I should be setting up on the 2nd NIC before I use it for the virtual network ?

Any help would be gladly appreciated :)

Hpyer-V guest NIC Teaming with legacy and VMBus NICs mixed

I tried NIC teaming (Guest/VM teaming) several times combining Hyper-V network cards(VMBus NICs) and legacy network cards (emulated NICs).

Everytime I try it, NIC teaming does not work with the legacy NIC. It does not matter if I dedicate it as a "standby" nic or spread the load. You may ask, why I try this: simply to demo the fact that NIC teaming should work vendor independent.

My question is: should this configuration work? If not: is this documented?

Hi.  I downloaded 6001.17119.071210-1916_amd64fre_Server_en-us-KR1SXFRE_EN_DVD.iso and put it on DVD and tried to install it on a server where Longhorn beta 2 and beta 3 x64 worked fine.  But I am not sure if the image is bad but it keeps coming up with with a window half way through the install that certain files cannot be found.

Could someone please give me the MD5 hash of the image?  I have pasted mine below.  Thanks!

hyper- and failover clustering

I have prepared a lab where I have storage and 2 physical nodes with HYPERV and failover clustering is installed on Windows Server 2012 namely HYP1 and HYP2

I presented the one of the disk to the storage and converted to the CSV, after doing this I created a highly available 2 VM on HYP1 where its VHD and all the configuration placed in the CSV which both the nodes can see.

When I stop the service on HYP1 one of the vm is moved automatically without any issue but another one cannot be moved and gives me error

Event id 1254

Clustered role 'Windowsz' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period

event id 1205

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'Windowsz' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

Event id 1069

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Windowsz' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'Windowsz' failed. The error code was '0x80004005' ('Unspecified error').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Hi,

Here is the scenario, we have 4 servers (hp ml110) running certain applications on each for our organization. We are planning to buy one high end server and virtualize all the 4 physical servers into this new server using Hyper v.

We are also thinking about having a Hyper v high availability cluster, for doing that we would like to make these 4 servers into one using any microsoft technology.

Any suggestions on doing that will be appriciated.

Thanks and Regards Mohamed

Setup development environment for offshore team using win 2012 hyper-v

I m planning to setup development environment for 4 developer. Below are requirement specification. I need help to understand the options that i must opt for better operatability and performance to access resource.

1) 4 developers will work remotely and connect to server resources such as tfs ,sql server 2008 r2 db ,dataware house , data mart and reporting system. These resources are up and running.

2) Allow developers to connect to development server which in turns help connect to server tfs,sql server etc. These development environment will have vs2012 , SQL client and other tools such EPI server and iis installed in it.

3) Is win 2012 hyper v is the option where I can configure VMware dev server for each developer such that VS2012 and other software are installed as one time and can be used across the developer or we may have to installed software for each dev environment.

4) What are options  available to connect to these dev server ? Is this a remote desktop connection or web based connection.

Please help, as I m ignorant in this area and need more insight to understand this. Thanks.

Network Virtualization and Virtualization Gateway

$

Hi Experts !

I was eagerly waiting for the last few months for trying out network virtualization.

We have two Hyper-V Clusters in Windows server 2012 - One in Primary Datacenter and one in DR - All configured and works well.

I installed an SCVMM 2012 Sp1 in the primary datacenter for trying out Network Virtualization.

Ultimately, I am looking for an option to move a VM from Primary HV Cluster to DR HV Cluster without changing the IP.

Questions I have now

  • I understand that Virtualization gateway is a mandatory requirement to allow communication between Virtualized network and non-virtualized network. A Windows 2012 Server with Routing and Remote access role can act as a virtualization gateway and we can expecting to see Network hardware to enable support. Does this means that the gateway IP which is getting configured in the VMs will be of the Virtualization Gateway and will be used to route all traffic through this IP?
  • If a live migration happens with in the cluster, SCVMM 2012 Sp1 will be updating the routes to the virtualization gateway. But I see that configuration provider for Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Gateways is not yet available. This means a PowerShell script will require to run every time along with a failover. Is that the right approach?
  • Failover to DR can happen only for the entire Network Virtualized subnet. Is that statement correct?
  • Is there any Microsoft certified virtualization gateway appliance available now?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help or clue on this.

Cheers ! Shaba

Windows 2012 Hyper-V

Hello to all. I´m on a project that involves Windows 2012 Std. Hyper-V and have some questions. The context is:

   a) I have a Windows 2012 host that will have Hyper-V installed and will hold 2 guests, one Windows 2012 DC and one Windows 2012 File Server.

   b) The host has several NICs, 10 to be exactly. The same host has a 8 Tb on RAID 5 just to hold the guest OSs. Customer networking is simple, has just 192.168.1/24 subnet.

   Questions:

1- I created a Windows 2012 teaming with 2 NICs just for the two guests and they will communicate with production environment. I´m confused if I must enter a production IP on the teamed host adapter resulted from 2 mentioned NICs or I just reference the teamed adapter during Hyper-V role installation and enter production IPs only on guests NICs, on for each guest OS.

2- As I will have 3 volumes for the guest File Server should I create 3 virtual hard disks on host and attach all three to the guest File Server or should I create just one big virtual hard disk and attach it to the guest File Server? What virtual hard disk type is the best, static or dynamic? What are the drawbacks on this case (extend, shrink restrictions)?

3- One guest will be a Windows 2012 DC and other guest will be a file server. Any specific recomendation for these kind of guests?

4- As the host has severals NICs, do you think is a good idea team 2 NICs to be the host production NIC (a second teamed NIC, not for the guests but for the host so I could get fault tolerance for it)?

   Best regards, EEOC.

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Replica not complete due to event logs Error Error 10111 Failed to mount the virtual hard disk

Hi guys,

I seem to be stuck. I have setup Hyper - V replica however I noticed that the health under status is showing a warning. The warning that I see in the Hyper-V manager is as follows.

Warning: Initial replication has not completed yet. The virtual machine will be ready for failover after initial replication.

I setup the replica settings on 3/8/2013 around 8PM  and i saw a progress bar and everything looked like it was going along fine. When I checked it this afternoon i saw the warning above.

I checked the primary server of the host where I am replicating this VM. In the event logs I see a few different Hyper-V errors.

Failed to mount the virtual hard disk '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy27\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks\Zeus_2A8BD7BC-E46A-452F-9474-C02EF281AD7D.avhdx' for virtual machine 'Srv01': The media is write protected. (0x80070013). (Virtual machine ID 479D181E-A303-4240-B3D1-CC945CEA27ED).

Event iD:16010

The operation failed.

Event iD: 32086

Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'Srv01' due to a non-recoverable failure. (Virtual Machine ID 479D181E-A303-4240-B3D1-CC945CEA27ED). Resume replication after correcting the failure.

I did see some articles relating to Server 2008 R2 for the first error but have been unsuccessful in finding anthing relating to Windows Server 2012 Standard 64BIT

Please let me know if anyone else has had this same issue and knows about how I can solve it for my situation.

THank you guys!

How to resolve socket exception on Hyper-V machine?

$

Recently, our entire QA environment moved from VMWare to Hyper-V virtual machines.

One of our applications sends UDP packets to a multicast cloud by a rate of 20K packets per second.

While that worked perfectly on the VMWare environment, the Hyper-V makes the application to throw the following exception after a couple minutes of work:

System.Net.Sockets.SocketException (0x80004005): An invalid argument was supplied
at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.Send(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size, SocketFlags socketFlags)

I've also managed to mimic this issue instantly when defining the socket's sending buffer size to 1,000,000 bytes.

How can I resolve this issue?

**UPDATE**: This is a log entry from the event viewer once the exception happens:

Hyper-V Role installation fails without reason (Windows Server 2012)

Hi,

We are building a new Hyper-V infratructure, based on Windows Server 2012 Datacanter and multiple HP ML350p Gen8 servers. We've been deploying lost of Server 2012 Hyper-V projects lately (all HP G6 servers), without any problems at all, but this project is a real pain:

We are unable to install the Hyper-V role on any server, at all! There's four of them! All hosts are HP ML350p Gen8, Server 2012 Datacenter, latest updates/firmware/drivers (HP SPP 2012.10.0). BIOS settings are correct/verified for virtualization.
We simply install Hyper-V via Server Manager without any modifications (not selecting any network adapters either, this is all done later using Virtual Network ).

The installation reboots the server, and during boot, the installation fails. After reboot, the Server Manager sais there's been an unexpected error, and have a nice day.

I've been digging through the CBS.log file, and there a very small ERROR portion during installation:

Hyper-V Server 2012 - Microsoft needs to make info easier to find!

$

Does Hyper-V Server 2012 (free version) include clustering, high availability, and fault tolerance free out of the box? (assuming the purchase of all the guest VM OS's across several hosts). What is gained by adding SCVMM and OpsMgr?

It would really be nice if Microsoft could produce ONE CHART explaining what is and what isn't included in Hyper-V Server 2012 alone, Hyper-V Server 2012 with SCVMM, Hyper-V Server 2012 with SCVMM and OpsMgr, etc...

They're just hurting themselves by making this information difficult to find on their site. In searching the www, I'm also finding a lot of misinformation which just adds to the confusion.

Hi,

I am trying to re-enable hyper v replication but I get an error:-

[Main Instruction]
Enabling replication failed.

[Content]
Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica server for virtual machine 'EX2010'.

[Expanded Information]
Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'EX2010': Operation aborted (0x80004004). (Virtual Machine ID F80A330B-9D0A-4CFD-B6B1-B69C023B2D69)

Replication was working great however I wanted to only replicate 2 out of the 3 VHD's for this machine. I removed replication and tried to enable again but this time I deselected the vhd I didn't want and choose "use existing virtual machine on replic server as the initial copy"

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Virtual machine, iSCSI storage and snapshots

Hi all,

I have VM with iSCSI attached disk on Hyper-V 2012. And when I take snapshot and then apply it, data on iSCSI disk changes. How does it happen? I thought that iSCSI disk is like physical and I can't take a snapshot from it. Perhaps this is the feature of my storage system or its hyper-v feature that realized by default.

Just curious what approach people are taking? In my research it seems the following are common:

1. SC 2012 VMM SP1
2. Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Solution Accelerator
3. Microsoft Virtual Machine Migration Toolkit

I only have about 100 machines to migrate

Since it seems Exchange Server is not supported for Hyper V Replica what other scenarios are not supported? Honestly I got very sad when I realized I could not use this with Exchange.

If theres any other scenarios please add them.
