NIC Team - Live Migration performance

$

0

I've got a 2 node Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster, and each node has 6 gigabit NIC ports. 2 are dedicated to iSCSI traffic, but the other 4 are in a Team. When I Live Migrate 20+ VMs, it seems to me that I should be able to achieve at least 2-3Gbps (adjusting for network overhead and such) transfers. I realize there are a great number of ways to configure a team in Server 2012, and I've experimented with all of them: Static Teaming, Switch Independent, LACP, and each of these can either be Address Hash or Hyper-V port. I've occasionally seen brief spikes up to 1.5Gbps, but that's it. The rest of the time it's at a very steady 1Gbps.

I've got these servers connected to 2 ProCurve 2910al switches with a 10gb backplane, and the switches are not being taxed with any other workloads. When I use the LACP teaming, I have tried both LACP-enabled trunks and enabling Active LACP on the relevant ports.

My biggest question is: is this even feasible? Has anyone achieved 2Gbps+ Live Migration speeds without using 10gb NIC cards?

Anyone? Bueller?

migrate xp-mode vhd from win7 -> win8

I have som programs only running on XP, and installed on a XP Mode.vhd running on Windows 7.

I have been able to move the vhd to Windows 8 and Hyper-V. BUT:
The license needs to be reactivated. Due to some problems vith addons I tried to mak phone-activation. Myt MS suggests that the copy is eventually pirated. I think its due to the fact that XP-mode is OEM, and I know no way to just change to a valid XP Pro license.

It is extremly many difficulties to bring old programs along:

- vhd splitted on 2 files, needs to be combined
- XPMUsers password - needs to be remembered/removed
- Virtual PC addons to be removed
- New integration addons (can't be installed if previous addons not removed)
- impossible reactivation
- impossible to upgrade OS to Win pro (no oem)

Joining Hyper-V 2012 Servers to a Virtualized Domain Controller

$

I am in the process of setting up two new Hyper-V Server 2012 hosts, the plan is to use one to host 4 server guest operating systems and to use the other for replication. I plan on installing a domain controller as one of the Hyper-V Guests and my question is whether or not it is safe to join the Hyper-V Server hosts to the domain when the domain controller is running as a guest on the Hyper-V Server itself.

From what I can gather administration of the Hyper-V Servers will be much easier if they are joined to the domain, however I am not sure if this will work since the domain controller would obviously be unavailable to the Hyper-V Host at start-up.

I know that best practice would be to have another physical domain controller for the network, and in the long run that is my goal, however the hardware I would like to use for that is a production server running ESXi now, once my migration to Hyper-V is complete I will be able to repurpose that server, but that may be some months down the road.

Would the best practice be to join the Hyper-V hosts to the domain or leave them in a Workgroup?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and Deduplication

Hi,

I'm installing Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V on it. It is going to run two virtual machines (Server 2012 and Server 2008 R2). Should I enable data deduplication in host machine to disk where the virtual machines are or should I just enable deduplication to this 2012 VM that is a File Server?

Server 2012 Hyper-V Network Layout Advice

I am building a five node Hyper-V cluster and am looking for advice on the network layout.. no iSCSI as we will be using an 8GB FC SAN.

Each host will have two physical quad port NICs in addition to the two on-board\embedded. Here is what I am thinking:

4 x 1GB VM Ports(Teamed using two ports on quad port card 1 and two port on quad port card 2.. Several trunked VLANs)

2 x 1GB Management Ports (Teamed on the two on-board\embedded.. VLAN1)

2 x 1GB Live Migration Ports (Teamed via one port on quad port card 1 and one port on quad port card 2.. VLAN2)

1 x 1GB CSV Port (third port on quad port card 1.. VLAN3)

1 x 1GB Cluster Heartbeat Port (fourth port on quad port card 2.. VLAN4)

The teams would have the physical connection split between two Cisco switches on an EtherChannel. Thoughts?

Hyper-V remote management console

Host server: Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V installed (already joined the domain)
DCs: Windows Server 2008 R2 (VMs of the Hyper-V host server)
Remote management computer: Windows 7 32bit with RSAT installed (already joined the domain)
Remote management user: A memeber of Domain Admins and logged on the remote management computer

I added my Hyper-V host server in the Hyper-V Manager console in RSAT on my remote management computer. I could manage the Hyper-V host server such asHyper-V Settings and Virtual Network Manager. But I could not see or manage the VMs. The system told meNo virtual machines were found on this server. I believe there are several VMs on my Hyper-V host server. And the Windows Firewall on both Hyper-V host server and remote management computer was diabled.

HyperV - ISCI Disk Passthrough Limit?

Hi,

I am having a problem with HyperV and ISCSI disk pass though. I have configured my LUNs to point at the VM host, however I can't seem to mount >12 MS ISCSI virtual disks on the VM server. They aren't appearing in disk manager. HyperV is also hung on trying to select a disk to pass through. Is this a known bug? Running Server 2008R2 SP1 with latest updates.

Private Virtual Switch spanning cluster nodes server 2012

Hi,

Is it possible to configure a virtual switch in private mode that allows VM's on separate nodes communicate? This was not possible on Server 2008 R2 and I was hoping that this had been fixed on Server 2012.  I'm trying to avoid the use of VLAN's for was is basically private traffic between VM's spread across nodes in a cluster.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi All,

I installed Hyper V Server 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop thinking it was a kind of VMWare. After I installed it the system is just starting in hyper V mode and I am unable to go back to Windows 7. Could someone help me in going back to my Windows 7 and how to uninstall Hyper V 2012 server.

Thanks

Hyper-V causing "stuttering" on Windows 8 Pro

$

When I'm running a Hyper-V VM (which I run most of the time) that is set to use 8GB of RAM, occasionally my mouse will experience "stuttering" or lag.  It can happen multiple times in a row, and sometimes is spaced out over hours.

Machine specifications:

Windows 8 Pro

i7-2500

16GB RAM

nVidia GeForce 470GTX

Hyper-V VM is on a secondary SATA drive that is only used for Hyper-V

Hyper-V VM is using 8GB fixed (another one is using 8GB min, 12GB max -- not running at the same time of course) with 2 vCPUs and two VHDX's, fixed.

Description:

The virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running.  The following actions may help you resolve the problem: 1) Verify that the processor of the physical computer has a supported version of hardware-assisted virtualization. 2) Verify that hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-assisted data execution protection are enabled in the BIOS of the physical computer.  (If you edit the BIOS to enable either setting, you must turn off the power to the physical computer and then turn it back on.  Resetting the physical computer is not sufficient.) 3) If you have made changes to the Boot Configuration Data store, review these changes to ensure that the hypervisor is configured to launch automatically.

Cause of Hyper-V-Integration-VSS Event 4098

$

I'm getting many events of id 4098 in my host Hyper-V Server 2012 event log.  The guest (Server 2012) for the event is on a pass through disk being backed up by DPM Server 2012 SP1 with an agent installed in the VM.  All integration services are being offered to the guest.

I have another guest (Server 2008R2) with pass through disks on another host (Server 2012) being backed up with DPM in the same manner and I do not receive these events.  DPM agent is also installed on this guest and all integration services are being offered as well.

Both guest systems have the current integration services installed.  Does anyone know the cause of this message?  The event text is:

'GUESTSYSTEMNAME': The Virtual machine D5C3A563-DD00-4CFA-A08A-826E37720499 cannot be hot backed up since it has one or more volumes with differencing areas located on different volumes

Thanks.

Dynamic Memory shows wrong numbers and as such doesn't work...

Hello all,

I have quite a lot performance issues on a Hyper-V 2012 cluster. I have enabled Dynic Memory for my VM's, but I have the idea that it is not working, or maybe even contra-productive.

What I see is the following: When copying a large file from the network to a "local" disk of the VM (disk is running on an iSCSI volume attached to the hosts), the first couple of GB's are going fine. Then at once, the memory is filled up (the memory graph in the taskmgr increases liniar to almost 100% usage. The VM becomes very unresponsive and the copy slows down from 115 MB/s to some 100 KB/s.

This is where dynamic memory comes in: The amount of memory that I see in the host is the startup memory (in this case 6 GB). It does not increase, all though there is enough mem free on the host and the max memory is set to, well let's show all values:

PS C:\Users\superadmin> get-vm sp0002-003 | refresh-vm | ft Name,VMAddition,Memory,MemoryAssignedMB,DynamicMemoryBu

So what I see is that the DynamicMemoryDemand is 1133. But in the VM, the memory usage is 98% of 6GB!

Why is this not matching? Please help me troubleshoot this.

Stephan van der Plas

Syspre using .VFD file in hyper-v?

Hi I am trying to execute the following sceanrio and need your help in executing it.

I have got a VM which i have sysprepped. Now i need to create new VM's using the sysprepped VHD.

My problem is that i want to automate the part where it brings up the new VM and asks the user to fill in the values like "Machine Name",domain and other stuffs which were stripped off by SysPrep. Can't i use an unattend.xml file and pass it along with the New VM so that it reads the values in the file and just complete the rest of the activities byitself.

I can't use SCVMM and have only Hyper-V with me.

Any help will be appreciated.

Kishore.

Server 2012 HYPER-V / SOFS Architecture using Direct Attached Storage

We have been looking into using Server 2012 Hyper-v with Scale Out File Servers.  We have been informed that the solution would cost less using a DAS device, but there would be a single point of failure due to the DAS device only having one controller (Attached locally). I'm not sure whether this information is correct.  I would be interested in hearing from any system integrators who have build Highly Available Server 2012 Hyper-v/SOFS solutions. We've been directed towards a traditional SAN setup using VMware Essentials. However, I have also asked for comparison using Server 2012 Hyper-V with a SAN storage setup.

Thanks

Blue Screen of Death while starting Server2003R2 Hyper-v image on Server2008R2 OS

Hi all,

I am getting a BSOD shown below while attempting to start a vhd on hyper-v. it was working perfectly fine a couple of days ago but now it has started showing this same BSOD everytime i try to start it. the vm is server2003r2 and host machine is server2008r2. There are 3 other VMs running fine on the same hyper-v manager except this one.

Its vhd is already set with IDE controller. There are 3 network adaptors connected to all VMs.

I am open to try anything to solve this issue. Therefore, please help me with any idea you may have to make this VM running.

Hyper-V 2012 + IBM Blade Center S

Hi  everybody.

I want to know if anyone here have implemented Hyper-V 2012 on a IBM BLADE S hardware. I'm asking this because of the storage subsystem. IBM didn't release the multipath drivers of this equipment for Windows Server 2012, and as Microsoft recomends, the best pratice is to use the manufacturer's driver.

Running expiring demos in Hyper-V

I've got a time synchronization question for people.

I've got a set of demos that contains certificates that will eventually expire.
Normally, I'd turn off host time-synching and save a snapshot, however, one of the demos requires a reboot, and it seems that Hyper-V always syncs the time with the host on a reboot.

I'd like to be able to run these demos on hyper-V, however, continually revving these demos because of expiring certificates is a non-starter for us.

In Virtual Server I was able to use the <time_bytes> config node to deal with this, however, as far as I know, there's no way to do this in Hyper-V.

Anyone have any suggestions?  Any WMI calls that I've missed?  I'd even be willing to go so far as to try my luck with *gulp* hypercalls, but I'd really prefer not to.

Ideas?

Gratefully yours,
-Mezz
