Is this PC sufficient for running Hyper-V in a home lab setup?

0

I've just acquired a Dell Optiplex 755 (Small Form Factor) with the following specs:

Core 2 Duo @ 3GHz

2GB RAM (8GB max)

160GB hard drive

It's Core 2 Duo processor supports VT according to the technical schematics on the Intel website. The PC is capable of a maximum of 8GB. Because there is only enough space for one hard drive in this system, do you have any suggestions on how I could optimize the performance of this system? Purchase a solid state drive perhaps? Also, because I won't be able to run 64-bit VMs inside Hyper-V, in therms of performance would I be able to get by with a lab set up that only uses 32-bit VMs? I'm currently acquiring equipment needed to help me study for the MCSA 2008 certification but unfortunately on a tight budget. Thanks!

I configured failover  cluster of two hosts (windows server 2012 core ) i don't know how to execute network adapter cmdlets

for example  Get-NetAdapterName

Get-NetAdapterName : The term 'Get-NetAdapterName' is not recognized as the
name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the
spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is
correct and try again.

After creating a second LUN for the CSV on our Storage (2 Contr., 4 NICs) its no longer possible to migrate VMs from one node to the other. All VMs have to run on one single node now.

Manual Merge of Snapshots but Snaapshot still whowing in Hyper-V Manager

0

Hi,

I've seen simaler queries regards to snapshots, but not the sitation we have.

We needed to move large VM to another host in a DR situation.  (Windows Sever 2008, R2)

The VM had one snapshot taken a year ago by a developed which we don't need.

To move the VM , we copied the VHD and AVHD files onto the new server and then did a manual merge of the latest running AVHD into the parent to create just one VHD per disk.

We then re-created the VM in the new server and attached the merged VHD disks

The server us running OK and has all the current data, but I am curious as to why in Hyper-V manager it still shows the snapshot tree for the new server, although we merged into its parent.

Please could you advise if we can ignoe this, or should we be taking additional steps to tidy-up.

Thanks,

Mark

Guide to remote manage Hyper-V servers and VM's in workgroups or standalone

0
0

This guide is based on the following 3 products:
Windows server 2012 (core)
Windows 8
Hyper-V server v3 / Hyper-V server 2012

The following guide will enable you to:

1: remotely manage your Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Hyper-V manager
2: remotely manage your Hyper-V servers' firewall with a MMC snap-in.
3: remotely manage your Hyper-V server (2012) with server manager

! This should also work for Core installations of server 2012, but I haven't tried.

This guide is purely focussed on servers in a WORKGROUP, or as a stand alone.
I CAN NOT tell you what you need to do to get it working in a domain.

* You can run these commands straight from the console (Physically at the machine) or through RDP.
* You will need to be logged on as an administrator.
* Commands are listed in somewhat random order; I do however advise to follow the steps as listed.
* Commands with ? in front of them are only ment to be helpfull for troubleshooting,
* and to identify settings and changes made.
* Commands and instructions with ! in front of them are mandatory.

- server: means the server core or hyper-v server (non gui)
- client: means the machine you want to use for remote administration.
- Some commands are spread over 2 lines; be sure to copy the full syntax.

> To enable the Hyper-V manager to connect to your server, you need to perform the following 2 actions: (Assuming you have already installed the feature)

1:
! Client: Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file.
! right-click --> properties --> security
! click --> edit --> add --> YOURUSERNAME or Administrator --> OK
! then select this new user, and tick the "modify"-box under the "allow"-section.
! apply the change, and close.
! doubleclick the file, and open with notepad
! add the ip-address and name of your server (no // or other crap needed)
! Save the file
# I recommend putting a shortcut to this file on the desktop.
# If you change the ip-address of your server (e.g. move the server from staging to a live environment)
# you might forget to do so in the hosts file.
# Hyper-V manager, MMC, RSAT, and Server-manager all rely on the hosts-file to resolve the name.
# some of these might connect to their respective service on an i.p.-level, but some don't.
# This is the main reason you need to modify this file.

! USE AN ELEVATED CMD/POWERSHELL PROMPT TO CONTINUE !
# the next config needs to be done on windows 8.
# It seems that it's already preconfigured under server 2012

2:
! Client: dcomcnfg
! open component services --> computers
! right-click -> my computer -> properties
! select "COM SECURITY" tab
! under "ACCESS PERMISSIONS" select "edit limits"
! select "ANONYMOUS LOGON", and tick "remote access" under ALLOW
# Without this adjustment, you can't connect to your Hyper-V server
# with the Hyper-V manager if you're not in a domain.

> And if you haven't done so already... make sure you have enabled remote management number 4 on the Hyper-V server console.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

> Next, is to get the MMC firewall snap-in working.
The reason for this, is to have a GUI available to configure it.
If you're happy without it, you may skip this and use a shell instead to do so.

? server: netsh advfirewall show currentprofile
# shows the current profile (public/domain/private) and its settings
# depending on your needs, you should set the right profile to fit your needs.
# You can easily do this when the MMC snap-in is done. (after you've followed these steps)

! server: netsh advfirewall set currentprofile settings remotemanagement enable
# enables remote management of the firewall on an application level
# (In other words: allows the firewall to be remotely managed)

! server: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Firewall Remote Management" new enable=yes
# allows remote management of the firewall, through the required firewall ports with TCP protocol.
# 4 rules will be updated to allow access: public & Domain, dynamic and endpoint-mapper.
# You can disable/add/change the rule from the MMC snap-in after finishing this guide.
# e.g. set the firewall through the MMC-GUI to only allow specific ip-addresses etc.

? server: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule all
# Shows a list of available rules, and their current state.
# when run from cmd, the list exceeds the maximum length for review.
# (from cmd, type:) start powershell, and run the command from there.

! Client: cmdkey /add:YOURSERVERNAME /user:USERNAMEONTHESERVER /pass:THEPASSWORDOFTHATUSER
# I recommend you to use a username with enough privileges for management
# All capital letters need to be replaced with your input
# CMD answers "credential added successfully" when you're done

! Client: locate MMC, and run it as an admin.
# In windows 8/2012, go to search and type MMC. Right-click the icon,
# and choose run as admin on the bar below.

! Client: application MMC: select "file" --> Add/remove snap-in
! --> (left pane) scroll down to "windows firewall" --> select and click "add"
! select "another computer"
! type the name of the server you want to manage (NO workgroup/ or //, just same name as you typed for cmdkey)

* Part 2 is done.
# Have a look by doubleclicking the firewall icon in the left pane.
# It looks and works the same as the GUI version that you are familiar with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! Next is the Server Manager.
# Follow the steps listed to get your server listed and manageable in the server manager.

! Client: Open the created Firewall snap-in for your server.
! Find the 3 "Remote Event Log Management" entries in the list of INBOUND rules, and enable them.

! Open powershell --> in cmd windows, type: start powershell
! run the following line in powershell
! Client: in C:\Windows\system32> set-item WSMAN:\localhost\client\trustedhosts -value YOURSERVERNAME -concatenate

# WinRM Security Configuration.
# This command modifies the TrustedHosts list for the WinRM client. The computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be
# authenticated. The client might send credential information to these computers. Are you sure that you want to modify
# this list?
# [Y] Yes  [N] No  [S] Suspend  [?] Help (default is "Y"): y
#
# I recommend to choose yes; unless you like to pull some more hairs...

! server: winrm qc
# WinRM service is already running on this machine.
# WinRM is not set up to allow remote access to this machine for management.
# The following changes must be made:
# Configure LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to grant administrative rights remotely
# to local users.
# Make the changes? y / n
!  select yes

! Client: open the server 2012 server manager
! click manage -> add server
! select the DNS tab, and type the name of your server

Done.

You can now manage your remote server through the familiar computer management GUI.

! Right-click your remote server, and select "Computer Management"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few side notes:

? The Performance tab seems to list the local machine's performance, in stead of the remote servers'
? If you want Windows server backup, you need to right-click the server in the server manager, and select "add roles and features.
? it will then become available under the "computer management" of the remote server.

If you liked this guide you may thank my employer, Mr. Chris W.
for giving me the time to work it all out.

Cheers!

What is the easist way to start over with Hyper-V

0

I have Hyper-V running on a Win 8 pro machine hosting a Windows Home Serve 2011 VM that backs up all the computers.

Previously I have used Virtualbox but figured that I would try out the Hyper-V that was available on Win 8 pro.

I had networking problems trying to share the Host network card with the VM as it shut down the hosts internet access when active.

I added a second network card and a dedicated 3TB disk for the WHS 2011 install and all seemed to be fine.

After a month or so the 2nd network card  went bad.    I replaced the network card and tried to switch the VM to the new network card.   I was unable to remove the old network card from the virtual switch.   On tracking this down it looks like when I took a snapshot of the WHS 2001 VM it looked like it was trying to access the old network card due to the snapshot.   I then looked at the snapshot and the snapshot was 1.8 TB where the original VHD was 160gb. I really did not understand the snapshot and figure it was more like a system-restore point to the VM.

The Manager stopped connecting to the VM but I could start and stop it and remote into it just fine.

I deleted the snapshot thinking I could get the networking cards fixed.  The merge went on for hours and hours and the VHD increased to about 1 TB and then stopped.  The snapshot file is still 1.8TB.   The VM backups stopped working and a repair of the database shows the WHS 2011 backups as corrupted.

Now I just want to completely uninstall the Hyper-V and start over from scratch preferably without reinstalling the Win 8 Pro host.

The VM is stuck at the stopping status and I cannot get it to stop completely.  If I double click on it in the Manager it restarts and I can remote into it.

So if I disable the Hyper-V feature in Win 8 Pro will this remove all the Hyper-V components and let me start over?

What is the easist way to remove all traces of hyper-v and just start over?

Just a short question in best practice should the Clustered disks and heartbeat network be on their own isolated network?

Server 2012 Hyper-V Host Crashes with BAD_POOL_CALLER need some help with fine tune analysis

Hello everyone,

I'm new to analyzing crash dumps and so far have come up with that it is likely I had some sort of memory problem or VHD issue with vhdmp.sys.  When it crashed there were many servers re synchronizing with their replicas which is hosted on a SMB 3.0 share on a server 2012 standard edition file server.  I know there likely was a lot of disk I/O and there are 12 VMs on it, 3 of them are rather big ones server about 2,000 people for video streaming and delivery.

Hyper-V, poor disk performance in guest VHD on SAS Raid 10 host

0
0

Dell R510 PERC H700: 8 virtual disks in total. System drive\OS on RAID1, other 7 VD on 4 SAS 600GB as RAID10

Host has 48Gb ram and is running dual Xeon E5645 CPU's

Read Policy: Adaptive Read Ahead

Write Policy: Write Back

Disk Cache Pol: Disabled

OS: W2K8 R2 ENT, Hyper-V + failover clustering

Each VM hosted in separate volume on RAID 10, SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition replicating the 7 volumes to two identical R510's

VM's: One Exchange 2010, one SQL2005, Citrix Server, File and Print (Os mixes of W2K8 and W2K3 64 Bit) plus a couple of other application servers.

Problem:

I am seeing very high average disk queue lengths in all the 7 VM's (maxing at 100 in performance monitor) whenever I try and do large(ish) file transfers (2Gb plus) whereas if I file transfer between the hyper-v hosts on their RAID1 disks and outside of the hypervisor layer, I see pretty respectable throughput and no maxing out on average queue lengths

Other symptoms: Exchange VM slows right down if anyone emails attachments of say +7Mb.

File and Print Server VM, long time to enumerate folder structures etc...

I've tried updating BIOS, RAID f/ware Broadcom network adapters (against my better judgement I've got a Broadcom LACP team upto my switch for VM LAN access). I'm also seeing pretty sluggish throughput with IPERF from other LAN computers into the Hyper-V VM's

Edited to add: have migrated one VM to a Hyper-V node in the cluster with no other VM's running, give the VM a load more RAM and still seeing same problem

Kind of running out of ideas here, any help appreciated

2012 Hyper-V Guests Very Slow to Boot

We have two identical Dell PowerEdge T410's running Windows Server 2012 Standard running as Hyper-V Hosts (and nothing else).

The Hyper-V guests on one of the machines take over 40 minutes to boot.  Once booted the VM's seem to perform well.  The second T410 is running without any problems.

The Dell has 40Gb RAM and has 12 virtuals, the 5 XP virtuals are running with 1 GB RAM each and the 7 Windows 7 VM's have 2 Gb.

When everything is running, the Dell's task manager says it's using 22.9 of 40Gb RAM and the CPU is ticking over at 1 or 2%.

I've just wiped and re-installed the host with a clean Windows Server 2012 with no improvement.

Dell's technical support has had a quick look and can't see anything wrong with the hardware side of things.  The BIOS settings in the problematic machine has exactly the same settings as the BIOS in the machine that is working OK.

The clients on the 'slow' host are all part of a domain with the domain controller on the 'good' host.  Tracert and ipconfig all report as expected.

A 'Google' has turned up a couple of articles which seem to only refer to Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the problem only started to appear when I installed Server 2012.

So, in a nutshell, two identical servers, the guests on one are working fine, the guests on the other take over 40 minutes to boot.

Could anyone give me any pointers?

Richard

Hyper-V Confusion ??

Hi Everyone,

I know this is a stuip and lame questions, but I have looked at a lot of Hyper-V stuff over the weekend and I was planing on installing it on my spare computer to play with it ..

But the one thing I cant find is , does it need Windows Server installed on the computer too ?? or can you just install it like you would any normal OS and just boot to CD ..

Please let me know and thanks for looking at such a stuip question ...

Adding promiscuous mode in server 2012 hyper-v

I am running a esxi lab within hyper-v and the vms within this do not want to connect to the network. I have been told that I need to enable promiscuous mode on the virtual switch and I can't find the option anywhere. I cannot get guest OSes to connect to the network under the vmware vsphere.

Is there any way to enable this? Please respond. Thank you.

Volume online or offline before creating a new VM?

Somewhere I've seen reference (but I can't find where) to having a volume "online" or "offline" before creating new VMs.

Does this sound familiar? *Should* a volume be online or offline before creating new VMs...or does it matter?

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use

This is really a complaint not a question.  I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years.  I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features.  I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out.  I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it.  This thing is a trainwreck!  There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine.  It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only.  I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi.  How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner?  I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?

Steps for free ESXi.

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.

5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!

Steps for Hyper-V

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.

5. Install server management tools pack.

6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.

7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.

8. Receive generic authentication error message.

9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!

10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!

Here is what I would prefer

I don't want to download any tools at all.  I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the  Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password.  It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console.  I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

Mount 1 volume to multiple hosts w/ iSCSI

Does anyone know if it is possible to create a volume and use iSCSI to mount it to two separate servers? We would like to set up a SQL cluster and need the ability to have the two SQL servers access a single volume containing the SQL database. We put together a NAS using FreeNAS software but so far no luck.

Any help would be appreciated...

Remote Desktop and Dynamic Memory

We're testing Server 2008 R2 as a Remote Desktop server, running under Hyper-V 2012.  We're testing it using dynamic memory, but we're getting horrible performance on the RDS.  Anyone else using this?  If we disable dynamic memory and just give it a static amount, seems fine.

must help please
