Hyper-V Backup Mode Backup Using Saved State resets Uptime in Hyper-V Manager

$

Hello,

during backup (from 2003 instance) uptime (runtime) in Hyper-V Manager is reset to 00:00:00.
I never can see how long the instance is up in real time from reboot/restart.

Is this a bug?

Windows 2012: Delete Snapshot and delete another previous snapshot same time: looks like snapshot corruption

Hello,

just noticed this effect as i decided to delete 2 existings snapshot of a machine in the same time:

- there is still one snapshot
- there is no "now"
- i can't delete the snapshot (Error, unknown parameter)
- exception looking to properties of this snapshot

Shut down instance, same effects.

- delete (same error)
- properties (exception and hyper-v managers close itself)

Restart Hyper-V Manager

- no snapshot visible

Restart Instance

- up and running

Yes - i think i am hitting a bug in Windows 2012 Hyper-V.
If it's allowed to delete 2 snapshot at the same time, it shouldn't result in this problems.

Hyper V Server 2012

Hi Team,

I got 2 brand new servers installed with Hyper V Server 2012 as the base and build a couple VMs on top.  For WSUS, I have a WSUS 3.0 SP2 running on a Server 2008 R2 Machine.  From the WSUS Server, I have installed the KB for WSUS to shows correct Windows Version and the WSUS is showing 5 updates is needed for the Hyper V Server.  Therefore, I logged in as Admin for the Hyper V and 6) for Download and Install Update.  Then A for All Updates and the Hyper V still also listed as 5 updates required. Then, I select A for all updates.

So, the Hyper V Servers shows Downloading Update.... Installing Update....  but Listing of updates installed and individual installation results show NOTHING and ask for reboot.  Rebooted and no updates is installed.  6 for download and install updates again and still shows 5 updates required.

How can i get this fix and deploy updates to the Hyper V Machine?

One of the hosted server over Hyper-V is not available over network

Hi

I have installed three machines over the Hyper-V (windows server 2008 R2). One hosted machine is additional Domain Controller (ADC) that is having connectivity problem. I have given static IP to all servers in my network. Some time hosted machine (ADC) is not available over network and not pingable but when I restart ADC Server it is pingable and working correctly.

Waiting for reply please.

Thanks in advance

WIndows 2012: Virtualized W2003 (32bit) crashes randomly

Hello,

I installed a fresh 2012 and run a virtualized Windows Server 2003 (DC) with Symantec Antivirus 10.5
No problems the first day but now this virtual instances crashes nearly once every day.

Problem Report from Microsoft shows that there is trouble with antivirus software and i should run an update.
I am confused why a years running physically server should have no antivirus problem as virtual instance.
But i did an update from the very old 10.5 to the available version 11.0.7300 and hoped that this solves the problem.
Today it crashes again. :-(

I have no further idea and can't believe that changing the virus software to another product would help.

VM network throughput very poor

$

Environment is as follows:

Dell PowerEdge T320 (new), 24 GB RAM, 2 Broadcom NetXtreme NICs (LOM) @ 1 Gbps. Infrastructure is also using 1 Gbps switch and client PCs are connected there.

Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V role installed. Just one VM running now, running SQL Server. A second VM created for testing purposes, but not running.

Network throughput from the VM is very poor, typically about 3-5 MB/sec when copying a large file, but sometimes below 1 MB/sec. SQL Server network performance is so poor that apps running from a client are not usable. Running the same app logged directly to the VM is very fast, so it's not the VM itself or SQL on that VM.

Network performance from the host is excellent - can copy large files at above 100 MB/sec, essentially saturating the gigabit backbone. It's VM network performance through the virtual switch/NIC to other systems in the network that's bad.

Existing Hyper-V servers (to be replaced) running Server 2008 do not exhibit this issue.

We've tested file transfers between two VMs connected to the virtual switch on the T320. Runs fine, > 100 MB/sec. Running SQL apps from a second VM connected to the virtual switch has excellent performance.

Everything points to the transition from the virtual switch to the NIC to the internal subnet. That path is very slow.

Any suggestions?

Snapshots and Domain Controllers - Are they ALWAYS bad???

$

One sees many posts against using snapshots on virtualized domain controllers. If the VM is running at the time the snapshot is taken, this makes a good amount of sense. But if the VM is off, how is this fundamentally different than any other means of backup???

In a larger sense, if ALL of the machines in a domain are cleanly shutdown, then snapshots taken, are there really any issues if the entire domain is restored back to the snapshots, even is significant (but less than tombstone) time/operations had occured in the mean time???

but uits not clear to me what to do where.

same for this:

How to delete empty folders on host?

Running Hyper-V server  2012 in a test environment, I have several folders and sub-folders remaining on the host from VMs which have been removed and I'm wondering how to delete these empty folders...I've been exclusively using the Hyper-V Manager from a physical Windows 8 box. Is it possible to delete these from there? I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Get-VHD failing with access denied when querying remote VHDs on SMB 3.0 shares

$

I'm out of ideas on this one. I'm attempting to do a Get-VHD to retrieve VHD info for some Guests that are using SMB 3.0 shares to remotely store their VHDs and I cannot remotely run the powershell command at all without getting  Error: 'General Access denied error' (0x80070005)'. Command running locally on the machine hosting the guest works fine.

Here is the Hyper-V Setup - Host is Server 2012 datacenter, guests are 2012 or 2008 R2 boxes. Storage server is Server 2012, domain is 2008 R2 functionality level if it matters, powershell version 3.0

Host1 --> Guest(1) --> {LAN}--> StorageServer --> Share --> VHD

Make sense? pretty easy, normal setup. The Host has full access NTFS rights on the share and all files, including the VHDs. As does my AD account. All on the same domain. If I RDP into Host1 I can retrieve everything just fine. However, the following methods will not work to retrieve VHD info of any Guest running on their VHDs off the share (get-vhd works if Guests have their VHDs on locally attached storage).

1.) Enter-PsSession Host1 and then attempt get-vhd

2.) Invoke-Command

3.) import module/hyper-v management tools on client then running get-vhd

4.) Executing GetVirtualHardDiskInfo method in WMI (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136797%28VS.85%29.aspx) to retrieve the job which results in same error message.

5.) Even attempting test-path $pathToVHD on the host will result in Access Denied error.

If I check the storage server hosting the VHDs I see some normal access requests come across on my Domain account followed a few seconds later by a null sid/anonymous requests which of course are denied. I have no idea why on earth they are coming across as null SIDs/anonymous requests but this seems to be the root of the issue. Is it trying to regenerate my credentials or something to access the VHD and failing? If so, is there a way to fix it?

HyperV - ISCI Disk Passthrough Limit?

Hi,

I am having a problem with HyperV and ISCSI disk pass though. I have configured my LUNs to point at the VM host, however I can't seem to mount >12 MS ISCSI virtual disks on the VM server. They aren't appearing in disk manager. HyperV is also hung on trying to select a disk to pass through. Is this a known bug? Running Server 2008R2 SP1 with latest updates.

OS - Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V installed

Hi there...I would like to see traffic captured and sent to a loging server in the Hyper-V which needs promiscuous mode enabled...I have been going through forums...

Its just a doubt...will the VLAN Promiscuous work (in the link - http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/tag/nic-team/ )

Alternatively, from this link - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/a3c0e8fa-976c-4100-88d7-ceba517d23aa/   - OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTERdoing it pro grammatically. If so, can you please provide me more information how that can be setup...

Child VM only getting 75% Parent CPU testing with Passmark

$

I have a fresh Windows 2012 Standard with Hyper V installation.

Created a VM installed Windows 2008 R2 standard. Allocated all 16 Virtual processors to the VM equally according to the dialog 100% of the total system resources.

Running the CPU Integer Math score on Parent (hypervisor) i get a score of 18630

Running the CPU Integer Math score on child VM with the 16 Virtual processors, Reserve (100%), Limit (100%) (Weight 10000) i get a score of 11388 roughly 61% of the parent score. During the Passmark test i see in the Hyper-V MMC that the CPU utilization for that VM appears to cap at 75%.

Is this just the reality of HyperV? Can a single child VM not actually have access to 100% of a CPU's performance?

I was planning to host this server on Hyper-V for now so that it could easily be scaled and moved to faster hardware but i'm not sure i want to take a 40% performance hit in the mean time.

My test machine is a Dell R710 with 16GB of RAM and 2 Xeon 5520's.

Hyper-V IDE maximum size?

I've read in the Hyper-V Resource Kit that IDE drives have a limit of 127GB, however on the following page in the Technet TechCenter it says that "Local IDE virtual hard disk" has a "maximum supported disk size on virtual machine" of 2 TB. I've got a production VHD about to cross that mark and need to know...Which is right?

Limiting assignable IP address of Hyper-V guest OS

$
0
0

Hi,

I'm using Hyper-V to create virtual machines and allow others to connect to them using Remote Desktop, where they have administrative privileges on the guest OS.

What I'm asking is that how can I limit the guest OS to use a single specific IP address?

From what I can understand, all the guest VMs are connected to virtual switches (external), which are then bound to a physical NIC on the server. The physical network is configured to route a block of IP addresses to the physical NIC on my server, and each single IP is configured in the guest OS. So, a guest OS might add another IP address from the block to its virtual ethernet adapter and disrupt the other VMs.

This is also an issue for internal / private switches as well. I have ranges of IP addresses designated for different services in VMs, and I'm basing my ACLs and firewall rules on them. If a guest OS changes the IP address inside the VM, it can disrupt my virtual network connectivity.

This is particularly important in a multi tenant environment.

Thanks in advance,

-Hamed
